About Broken Branch Falls

Doing homework for bully ogres and getting laughed at as the butt of pixie pranks, Gabe is tired of his goblin life. When he and his friends step out of their nerdy stereotype and pull a prank of their own on the dragons at the first football game, it literally backfires, bringing a High Council vote to dismantle not only Gingko High, but the whole town, too!

The Book of Ages–hidden handbook of the High Council, filled with knowledge and power–may be Gabe’s only hope. With the help of friends old and new, can Gabe complete his quest to find the Book in time to save Broken Branch Falls? Or will he remain an
outcast forever?

My Review

Broken Branch Falls by Tara Tyler is a skillfully written young adult novel that delves into topics such as racial bias, and human stubbornness and unwillingness to change. She uses characters (beasts) vampires, goblins, ogres, werewolves and more along with humor to bring the highly touchy content to a child’s level.

Broken Branch Falls is a town that includes a mixture of species. Each species has their talents and specialties. The children go to school together, but aren’t allowed to intermingle. It is Gabe the goblin along with his goblin friends who play a prank on the dragon football team that spurs intermingling between species. When Gabe is caught, he is forced to join the football team, ogres, at his school as a punishment. Needless to say the punishment backfires. Gabe and the ogre football team become friends, which start a wave of friendship between the other students and beasts on campus. The high council along with the majority of the adults believes strongly in keeping to the rules that have managed them well for hundreds of years and maintained the peace between beasts. The youngsters don’t want to lose their new friendships and set out on a journey to find the Book of Ages, and bring in a new way of thinking. Along the way the strange group meets a few more, enlarging their group as they accomplish more together than any single species could have done alone. Survival takes teamwork.

Tara Tyler’s witty style of writing is sure to keep the reader laughing and turning pages. She captures the personality, and rebelliousness of the average teenager as well as the stubbornness of a single way of thought that is no longer relevant to society.  The message she sends is one that people have been struggling with since the dawn of humanity.

Outstanding read!
