 Prologue:

St. Augustine, 1823

Cara shivered, the stone cold floor beneath her. Shrieks sliced through the air above her, echoing through the stone walls. A moldy stench, thick in the surrounding air, drifted up her nostrils. The temperature dropped several degrees as a breeze touched her head. She dared to open her eyes and stare into the darkness surrounding her, peeling one eye open and then the next.
“Cara,” sounded a soft voice, almost a whisper. A warm touch caressed her hand, a shadowy figure flashed before her eyes. “You need to leave.” The soothing voice didn’t elicit fear but warmth and love. Her eyes searched for whom it belonged to. A breeze brushed against her and the voice whispered in her ear. "You need to go. I can lead you.”
She tilted her head and gazed upon a transparent woman, no more than twenty. Her flaxen hair fell across her shoulders, circling her heart-shaped face. “Who are you?” Cara stammered.
“I’m Alda, once like you. They’ve been here for centuries, before the pirates, before the first settlement. The true first inhabitants of this continent.”
“Who are they?”
“They are Bloodseekers. Come now!” The urgency in her voice resounded inside Cara. She jumped to her feet and followed the apparition. Alda’s white bodice hugged her torso, the black hem grazing the stone floor.
Light from candles illuminated the darkness as they wound through a narrow passageway, as one candle lit ahead of them, the one behind went dark. The brightness of each light cast a glow on the shadow beside it, lighting the faces of each ghost. One apparition after another, men and women, blood drenching their shirts and bodices from the fang marks in their necks. The chilly air sent waves of shivers spiraling through Cara’s body. She lifted her arm to touch a girl, no more than twelve, but her hand went through the child’s face.
They came upon a fork in the passage, Alda motioned for her to stop. Quickening footsteps sounded from the right. “Plaster yourself against the wall, into the shadows. They see heat, our lack of it will protect you.”
Cara did as asked. Not questioning Alda. She knew the footsteps belonged to a Bloodseeker. One had come into her home and killed her family, draining them of every drop of blood. She tried to escape, to run, but he was too quick. His dark eyes bored into hers. And a voice inside her head commanded her to stop. Her body froze in place. She tried to move but his mind controlled the core of her brain and she collapsed, waking up on the stone floor.
Her back against the wall, the shadowy apparitions swarmed around her, blanketing her in darkness, shielding her from the Bloodseeker. His footsteps halted at the fork, as if deliberating which direction to go. He turned and followed the corridor leading to the room she’d left, he halted. His black eyes glowed through the shadows surrounding her. She closed her eyes tight, to avoid his mind commands and held her breath. Cara stayed as motionless as possible, controlling the tremors threatening to shake her body.
Her sense of hearing heightened with her eyes squeezed shut, she heard his footsteps walk away from her and continue through the corridor. She popped her eyes open and watched his form through the corner of her eye. When he disappeared around the corner, Alda motioned for her to follow. He’d know she wasn’t there. He’d look for her. The apparitions parted as Cara moved away from the wall.
Alda floated up the stairwell as Cara followed with gentle footsteps, careful not to draw his attention. A wooden door appeared before Cara as she reached the top of the stairs. Alda motioned for her to open it, the hinges creaking as she pushed it open.
Moonlight from the crescent moon streamed through the parted heavy curtains, bathing the room in enough light that Cara could see. Dozens of ghosts swarmed the room. Now, able to see them clearly, she gasped. Their skin tones and origins varied - black, white, and varying shades of brown. None older than her. Their styles of dress told her many lived centuries before her. A young black ghost hovered in front of her, clothed in a thick graying dress. Her gentle brown eyes sent a burst of warmth through Cara’s quaking, goose-pimpled body.
Alda soared towards a bookshelf and pointed to a nondescript brown leather book. “Pull it.”
Cara hurried towards the shelf and lifted the book, the shelf easing back to reveal another room.
“Take the book inside the room. The door will close behind you.”
Cara didn’t argue. Thundering sets of footsteps pounded the floor behind her, only moments from catching her she dived into the room. The book case closed, leaving behind all the ghosts except Alda. A Bloodseeker rushed towards it, catching it with his hand. He forced the heavy door open. Cara scooted away from his grasp.
A bright red light flickered from the corner of the dark room. “Grab the light!” Alda yelled. Cara scurried towards it, dropping the book as she reached for it. She held it firmly in her hand and tugged, but the object was caught on something she couldn’t see in the dark.
The Bloodseeker dived for her, catching her other arm in his firm grasp. A blast of white light diffused through the room from the object Cara clutched in her hand. He pulled her towards him. She tightened her grasp as the object and the nail it was stuck on slackened from the wall. The Bloodseeker, too late to stop her, screamed in agony as the light blasted him against the door, his body engulfed in flames.
The light enveloped Cara, pushing its way through her body. She burst into fire, the flames licking the walls, then eddying into nothingness. Her ginger hair now crimson red, her amber eyes shining as garnets in the darkness. Beneath her skin, muscles exploded to the surface.
“What’s happening?”
A smile widened on Alda’s face. “You’re the one. We’ve waited for you.”
“What do you mean and how come I can see you and they can’t?”
“You are a Slayer, that’s why you see us. As long as you wear the amulet you will be indestructible and invisible to the Bloodseekers. They won’t be able to harm you. Your job is to find others like yourself and slay every last Bloodseeker. Don’t ever take it off and keep it protected beneath your clothes. Should it fall into their hands they will use it against you. You see us because you are special. All the answers are in the book. Take it, place the amulet around your neck and leave now!”
Cara leaned over and grabbed the book. She then pulled the glowing amulet over her head. “What about you and the others?”
“You have freed us. We are forever grateful but you must leave.”
Cara hurried towards the door, stepping on the Bloodseeker’s ashes. The door opened for her and she ran through the house, ghosts guiding her way. She dodged the Bloodseekers, their dark glowing eyes searching, fangs sharp as daggers protruding from their upper gums. Their blood covered mouths saturated the air with scent of iron. Claw-like fingers sliced through the air, scratching her clothes as she sprinted past them, hurdling tables and furniture with skill and agility unknown to her.
Finally reaching the front entrance, she twisted the golden knob on the large, chunky door and ran into the morning’s first light. Dawn. The sun rising just above the horizon. She stepped onto the porch, Bloodseekers on her trail. Stumbling down the steps, she landed face first in the dirt. Scrambling she lifted herself upright and quickly turned towards the house.
A tall, thin Bloodseeker hissed, shielding his face as he sank into the house, flames licking his hands. The sun’s light rose bigger and brighter in the sky, immersing the house in radiance. The ground shook. She sprinted.
Reaching the relative safety of the tree line, she turned in time to watch the ground part around the house, swallowing it. Thousands of lights glowed as the ghosts swirled into the atmosphere, rising high into the sky as they disappeared. Screams reverberated in the air surrounding her as the Bloodseekers were burned and buried.
She cupped her ears and knelt, curling her head towards her knees to muffle their death screeches. Unable to stifle the noise, tears rose to her eyes from the pain in her throbbing ears. As soon as the screeching began, it stopped, and the earth filled in above the house. The ground appeared undisturbed. The sun shone high in the sky, erasing the dreadful night.
Cara lifted the amulet hanging against her chest, a large red stone set in the center surrounded by, and hanging on, a silver chain. She clutched it, the book tucked beneath her arm, and marched down the road. Not a soul peered outside their windows or took notice of the event.

The house was wiped from existence and erased from St. Augustine’s inhabitants’ minds. Cara’s secret.

Blood Ties is a paranormal/shifter/romance story.

Meet K 3 4 G E N - He's not quite human.

Sweat ran down Keagen’s muscular back as he pressed the female against the wall. His rock-hard body, with perfect proportions and stamina that would outlast a stable of thoroughbred racehorses, was nowhere near to flagging. He’d pounded the woman for the last hour, nonstop. The female on the receiving end of his attention cried herself hoarse more than twenty minutes earlier. She needed to rest, but large hands cupped her ass, supporting her weight, and only when he’d had enough would he let her down.

With the air-con turned up high the smell of fresh sweat and sex hung in the air. Keagen loved to fuck; he had some catching up to do after his sex-starved existence for the first part of his adult life. Puffing out a few quick breaths, he built up his pace. He was ready for a beer and wanted the woman out of his room.

Keagen was tall, muscular, and stronger than most men were, although he wasn’t exactly a man. His genes were human DNA with a hint of animal, courtesy of Solgen Laboratories. It wasn’t common knowledge what the company did, and their labs were all in secret locations. Only their financial backers knew where they were. Who supported them was unclear. Possibly the government, private military organizations, or even wealthy dictators; no one knew. You would not find any documentation about it. It wasn’t legal what they were doing, that’s for sure.

Keagen tracked and hunted escapees and always caught his prey, but just one eluded him, and it pissed him off. Nevertheless, he was closing in, and soon he’d return to base with his prize in tow. Given free reign to come and go as he pleased, Keagen enjoyed the freedom, and as long as he brought in the bounty, all was well. Sometimes out in the field for days or weeks at a time, he upheld contact by phone; a check-in, but he wasn’t worried. Sometimes he needed ‘Keagen’ time. Holed up at his secret hideaway, or a motel, where a steady stream of females frequented his room, he could easily fob off his supervisor. The geneticists made the mistake of giving him just a little too much intelligence. Consequently, his IQ already rivaled some of the top minds in the world, and he was smart enough to hide that fact from his testers.

Grunting and hissing through gritted teeth, Keagen screamed his orgasm as he fucked the flagging woman; those last deep thrusts into her satisfied pussy filling the room with a guttural cry. Throwing his head back, his wet hair slapped against his shoulders. The muscles in his thighs held the female firmly against the wall for a few moments until his hips finally stilled and finished jerking. Catching his breath, he rested his head against the cool plaster before releasing the sighing woman. As she tried to stand her knees buckled, but he quickly scooped her up and laid her on the bed.

Meet Gabriel - Lycan

It was quiet in the smoke-filled bar. Just the gentle humming from the waitress broke the silence. Drew’s was a rundown place where the locals piled in after work. Mostly hanging out for just a few drinks to wind down before heading home, they used it as a stopgap, preparing for more stress from either home life, or a second job. There were the regulars who propped up the bar day and night. Jack, one of the old-timers, spent all his time drooling over the young women as they tended bar. Occasional delivery trucks would hole up in the parking lot and the drivers would drop in for coffee, just to keep from falling asleep on long hauls. Smokey and dark, subdued lighting with wood paneling covering the walls and an unvarnished wooden floor, it was a place to relax and ponder.

Gabriel was a regular and sat at the end of the bar in his usual place. From his vantage point, he could view the entire room. He didn’t have children or work to unwind from, but still enjoyed a cool beer. Without turning his head, the washroom and entrance were all visible. He could see everyone come and go with ease. Sitting quietly, he’d listen. Unless someone started the conversation first, he’d barely speak, but take in everything.

The quiet town appealed to Gabriel. Moving here just over a year ago, he settled in easily and found a place to stay. After renovating a cabin just on the edge of town, it gave him the seclusion he desired. He could take a short drive into suburbia and have everything he needed before returning to the solace he preferred. He kept to himself and avoided confrontations. Causing trouble wasn’t in his nature. However, he came over as someone who didn’t take crap, and he would let small annoyances slide until he reached a breaking point, then you didn’t want to be around to see the fall out. On a few occasions, Gabriel let people know he wasn’t someone they should fuck with, earning him respect shortly afterward. In sleepy town bars, there’s always someone dropping by to stir up the calm. Stepping in to deal with troublemakers made him the resident bouncer. There was never any exchange of cash; he didn’t need a regular job. He just did it. Drew made sure he never went thirsty and all drinks were on the house for keeping the place brawl-free, which suited Gabriel. The more beer, the better, and he didn’t like having his peace and quiet disturbed; it was a win-win situation.

Watching Lyssa brought out his more human characteristics; he’d not always had those. A year ago, he was nothing more than a caged animal. He tried not to think about the past, but occasionally something would trigger his thoughts.

Taking a mouthful of beer, he watched everyone and everything. Casually watching Jack eye up the sweet piece of ass, he grinned. He’d been close, and was still working on getting closer. Never short of female attention, Gabriel made up for lost time as soon as he broke free from his captors. There wasn’t a huge choice of pussy in Dewburn Falls, but quality, not quantity was the issue here. Lyssa would succumb to him, eventually. Women couldn’t resist him. He was astounded she’d lasted this long; he had a feeling she’d be worth the wait. Continuing his advances and hoping for a victory soon, Lyssa proved an interesting challenge.

He wasn’t sure if it was luck, or fate, that brought him here, but finding two female lycans was a surprise. Taking a drink, he smiled as his thoughts turned to Sally. He’d been in town only two weeks and gotten lucky with her.

Excerpt:
I found myself in his room. My body fell back on his camel covered bed, rolling his comforter around me as if it were his arms and inhaled in the sweetness of his bed seeking any lingering Einstein scent. Instead, I smelled fabric softener. I bounced upwards from his bed like an alley cat being chased by a bulldog and ransacked his room, searching for clues, anything to tell me why he left.

I went through his drawers, tore books off his shelves one by one and found nothing. Then I remembered the hallways! Through his closet, I entered the passage and must have walked through each passage several times before a picture caught my attention. It was Einstein and a friend on what looked like a camping trip. They looked about ten or eleven. I pulled the picture off the wall and studied it. The light caught a small bump behind the picture, something was there. I took the back off and a newspaper article dropped to the ground.

On it a picture of the boy who was in the picture with Einstein. He disappeared, his dead body turning up on a hiking trail in Oregon. Stuck to the inside back of the picture frame was a map containing a list of names and addresses I remembered from my time running around the country with Einstein. Each person wealthy and of high importance, including the judge whose letter opener I stole by accident and returned by way of drunk bum.

I kept the map, the article and put the picture back, then checked every picture lining the passage ways - more newspaper articles. I laid them out and read. The court tried the person arrested as the boy’s killer, but with lack of evidence, they found him innocent. The judge on the case was letter-opener-judge. I read each article. They read almost the same - missing children, a few found dead. The list went on and the story swirled into clarity. Einstein’s mother told me he wanted to be an FBI agent, and his friend mysteriously kidnapped and murdered. Many of the homes and cities we visited contained the missing children. He searched for clues to his friend’s abduction and the other children.

Einstein’s dated laptop called out to me. I plugged the cord into the wall and pressed the power button, it sputtered to life. I typed in Einstein as his password and it zoomed to the next screen. On a hunch I searched through every file, nothing, until I discovered an encrypted file. I felt the sides and back of the computer and bingo it had a USB drive, so I ran-tiptoed back to my room grabbed my flash drive then uploaded his documents to it.

My mind buzzed with activity, my body drained. I didn’t yet understand the connection between the children if one existed, but I’d figure it out for Einstein.

Moonlighting in Paris Cover Reveal and Re-release!

Moonlighting in Paris Baby Girl Book II is now available!

Excerpt:

I walked and walked ducking through alleys and shops attempting to confuse and lose him. When I no longer felt the sting of his bouncing eyes on my back I headed to the hotel. I spent so much mental energy evading him I’d gotten lost then I remembered the crude map Jean gave me; I unfolded it, checked street signs, and plotted the course. When I reached the hotel I wound my way up to my room, dropped on my bed and thought of my discoveries.

Ring! Ring! The phone blasted and my body jumped in an involuntary lurch, falling off the bed. I scrambled to my feet, and picked up the phone, as if it would blow up in my hands.

“Hello?”

“Miss Holmes, this is Didier. How is your stay?” His French accent melted the words off his tongue, and my anxiety disappeared.

“I’m great, and yes, all my needs are met.”

“If there is anything more I can do to make your stay unforgettable, don’t hesitate to ask.” Is it customary for hotel owners to call their guests?

“Thank you.” I placed the phone on the receiver.

Within minutes of hanging up the phone a knock rattled the door. Room service? I hadn’t placed an order. I grabbed a doll sized statue seated on a table, in case Mr. Dancy Eyes stood on the other side, and opened the door. To my thankful surprise it wasn’t Mr. Dancy Eyes, but a bottle of complimentary wine and a bouquet. The delivery boys’ eyes scanned the statue in my hands, and he pushed the gifts toward me as if to block my blow. With a sheepish grin I set the statue back on the table and took the vase and wine. A card on a stick hidden amongst the flowers read Invitation. I opened it and read, Join me at the restaurant downstairs for dinner under the stars tomorrow, Didier with a yes and no box underneath the print. The boy handed me a pen. I marked the yes box and gave it to him. After all, now I was glamorous Justine, and lived an exquisite life. He nodded as he caught it by the corner then scurried to the elevator.

In the Beginning Cover Reveal!

For the past couple weeks I've had new covers for all Baby Girl Books and I've waited impatiently to show them off. Cover for In the Beginning Book I. Thanks to Manuela Cardiga for designing all the covers. It was a wonderful surprise!

In the Beginning not only has a brilliant new cover but a couple new scenes, additions to scenes, and another few rounds of editing. Book I will be available Monday May 4th. Each week another book in the series will be released. Start reading now from the beginning.

One night Star and Peewee followed us out and caught up to us as we finished hijacking items from the house. The second we stepped outside the house a familiar whisper, “Cleo” alerted me Star followed us. My body halted mid-stride as I caught sight of her and Peewee’s shadows standing against the wall of the house. Einstein motioned for them to edge their way to the back of the house where there were no light sensors. Star shuffled towards us, but Peewee stepped out too far and the lights went on brightening the entire side of the house. Oh crap! We fled in varying directions. I held the bag of loot in my hand and once I ran I didn’t turn my head to look behind me. I hastened my pace at the sounds of people. Several blocks away I cowered in an alley to catch my breath. Einstein was right behind me and ducked into the alley with me.

“Star and Peewee, are they with you?”

He shook his head as if to say ‘no’ and turned his eyes downward. “It’s time to leave” he said after a moment of silence.

“OK, yeah, we need to get back.”

He grasped my shoulders. “Leave - as in this city. There were too many lights, commotion, and sirens at the scene for Star and Peewee to slip away. They aren’t as savvy as we are. The police are gonna be looking for us next.”

My mind absorbed with escaping I missed the wailing sirens. He was right and my head reeled at the implications his words threw at me.

“You think they’ll tell on us?”

The nod of his head told me ‘yes’.

I couldn’t leave yet I needed my bag from its secret place.
“We gotta go back to the warehouse. I have something hidden there that I need.” His eyes grew soft, and he agreed.

Back at the warehouse, I went straight to my secret place. Within minutes the sound of voices tickled our eardrums and lights flashing beneath us.

“Squish in beside me.”

Without a moment to spare Einstein squeezed in the cubby hole. Radios blared on the other side of the cubby and police scoured the building but came up empty. I whispered in Einstein’s ear, “Star and Peewee squealed quick.”

“They did - or the police are here for something else.” ‘Something else’ was possible. Either way, neither of us wanted to get caught. Hours passed with Einstein and I scrunched on top of each other. Teenage hormones, close quarters, and our semi attraction to each other brought our relationship to a new level. Our hearts raced together from the excitement. Einstein held me flush against him.

EXCERPT

The humid air is sluggish; hazy with heat. In the distance the Masinga Mountains are veiled with mist, their blue outlines blurred to dirty grey and sinister pall overlays the region.

Inside the kraal - the family’s compound- the huts look like ant hills visited by a marauding Aardvark: shattered, weatherworn, derelict.

His father’s and mother’s hut stands empty. Already the east side of the roof has caved in, and only the section that overhangs the door still stands. There, two pairs of bull’s horns hang. Blowflies buzz and glut on the blood clotted at the base of the horns. They are still gory, still fresh—only two days old.
His youngest grief is only two days old, though he cannot remember its beginning, nor foresee its end.
These are the horns from the bull slaughtered for his mother’s funeral.
These huts were once the mirror of his family’s pride: neat, with whitewashed walls. One hut had been for his parents, one hut for the children, and one for storage; one for guests, and one for the kitchen.
In the last days of his mother’s life she had slept in the guest hut. Samson had wanted to repair her hut, but she had refused.
“Samson, we are guests in this world, and I am soon to journey to my Maker, I need no hut.” She had known she hadn’t long to live.
Samson stares blindly at the rubbish dumped at the door of the hut. His father had become too weak to clear it, then his mother; and as the rubbish dump had grown in height, so had their troubles.
He watches two empty plastic bottles roll down the putrid hill to clank to a stop against a rusted tin.
The cattle kraal is empty too, the goat enclosure vacant. His very soul is empty.
He looks at the graves. The only full things in this place are graves. Two forlorn heaps, two unmarked heaps of dust, all which is left of his former life.
Two chickens cluck past him, pecking idiotically at the dry soil. Loud wailing and curses suddenly fill the air, and the startled chickens squawk and flutter away in alarm. It sounds again: like the fearful wailing of a duiker-fawn caught in the clutches of a caracal, it is a horrible, hopeless cry for help.
“Why Bhaba? Why? Why? Mama why? Why? Why God? Why?” he screams.
It is his own scream, this sound. His.
Cries of hopeless pain tear at his throat, and he cries until there is nothing left; no tears. His grief leaves him dry, dry and barren; like the land without rain, he is left without tears or breath. Desperately he gasps for air. Trails of tears meander down his dust-covered skin. Bone-tired, worn out by a burden of grief beyond his young strength, he slumps down on to the ground and falls asleep.
It is the second day after his mother’s funeral.
It is the second day of the death of his heart, his pride. It is the second day of his birth into a new life.
***
Every Zulu child is given two names at birth: a Zulu name and a Bible name. His father had baptised him Samson Ndlovu - meaning Elephant - Zondi: the strong, the great. His father had been very proud of his first born son. He, that was Samson, had carried his name with great pride.
“Samson Ndlovu Zondi, you are the oldest son of Petrus Zeblon Zondi, fourth generation and a descendent of Bambatha Zondi; the country’s first freedom fighter. There has been a freedom fighter in this family in every generation after him, and you must follow in their footsteps.” His dad had told him this, again and again during his childhood, and again in his grief clouded dream, he hear these words.
He must fight. It his Fate, it is written in his name, and it flows in his blood.
