Wings of Fire by Stephanie Mirro

I'm adding this to my all-time favorites list. It's worth a second read or more.

My Thoughts:

Wow! The writing, the characters and the plot are all fantastic! If I could give 6 starts I would.
I love the tension and play with the grim reaper from the DEA. The story is hysterical yet there's a solid mystery and a few twists. The author has the ability to string words together in a fashion that is enteraining and bulds character. This story caught my attention and kept it. I'm not one to read or listen to a story more than once but with this one I just might!

Out of Darkness They Came by Gene Penny

If you're looking for something equal parts suspense, mystery, humor, supernatural with a pinch of yuck, this is it!

My thoughts:
This book isn't exactly what I expected but was a pleasant surprise. There's action, suspense, supernatural and simply some oddities that made it both funny and a nail biter. A group of students and a few adults are in a high school during the wee hours of the morning when a series of strange occurrences start to happen. As a high school biology teacher who is an hour early ever day, before the sun is up, the sky outside is black, I'm in my classroom preparing for the day. I know what those times feel like and the authors descriptions were so very appropriate and true. They had me laughing.
Gene Penny is a very talented writer. The descriptions were spot on and done with finesse. The characters were three dimensional, mind you I didn't like them all. But if a book is written appropriately I won't like them all. There was more language in it than I personally care for and even though the narrator was good, great pacing, I was a bit unnerved by the male to female voices. That's probably more of a personal listening thing.
The story was great! I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery, suspense and/or the supernatural.

The Unheard by Anthony Del Col episodes 1-8

Neat story done as 8 podcasts using multi voice actors!

My thoughts:
I love how this was done. Melissa Lopez is a San Diego California girl in college in Europe. She gets involved with a missing student Anna and as a class assignment starts a podcast interviewing everyone who knew the missing student. Each episode the story left me hanging, wanting more.

As the story progresses it gets more mysterious with a paranormal twist. This is the first time I've listened to an sudio with several voice actors and I really enjoyed it. They were all really good and played their parts well. The story is genius and each episode made me curiouser and curiouser. I would definitely reccomend this for anyone who loves mystery and plot twists.

New Story

In the last few days I've started a new story.

Often times people ask what my inspiration is and I'm at a loss for words. Most of my stories have no direct inspiration. They come for the dark bowels of my mind but this new one has direct inspiration.

I had a dream and all I remember is the structure of the building and layout of the floor plan along with something else that I won't give away because it would give too much.

The story centers around a young newlywed couple who have just purchased and moved into their first home. Its an older home with a history, not all of it is dark but it is mysterious.

The husband is an environmentalist and the wife is an almost agoraphobic. In their home they discover something unique and it forces them in different directions. Each spouse also has personal demons that I have yet to discover. They also have their own agenda. Characters only give me glimpses.

As the fashion with all my stories I know how pieces fit together but not the whole thing. In other words I have no idea how it will end I only keep up with writing a chapter as I see it.

As I mentioned the home has a history, lots of history actually. It was built in the 1920s in west central Florida. The selling point for the husband was the unique energy efficient features. For the wife I have yet to understand why she was drawn to it, possibly because it's secluded and she doesn't like to be around large crowds.

He is a scientist, an explorer, someone who seeks to unravel mysteries and she would rather spend her life inside and let mysteries remain mysteries.

This story isn't overtly scary but delves into the fear or fearlessness residing inside the characters. It also lacks much of a character cast with the exception of the newlywed couple that has to get over their growing suspicions in order to live peacefully and successfully.

Generally I have a name before a story. In this case I have the story. Character names are clear but the stories name is Work In Progress on my computer. If anyone has a suggestion from what I've described feel free to offer in the comments below.

The Hidden by Ethan Sandlow

Good story and especially loved the ending.

Review:
Amanda helps out at the local soup kitchen. She lives alone with her cat and otherwise seems to have a very boring existence until she meets a Lycan that changes everything. She's an empath and there's people after her. The Lycan takes it on himself to help her escape the madness and get away safely but around every turn is danger until the very end.

The story wasn't quite complete to me but then again it's a series. Maybe more light on why or who is chasing her. The action is great and the book is safe for any ages. The suspense factor is medium, not edge of the seat but curiosity piquing. I thought the end was cute, although, I'd expected it for quite some time. Either way it was still fun.

A good story.

Wendigo Fever by Kevin Hardman

Not what I expected and pleasantly so.

My Review:

This is a fantasy/horror in my opinion and a short listen. The main character Errol is brother of the Warden and the man who keeps the land safe from horrible creatures. When his brother disappears and the people have problems that need assistance he rises to the occasion. He helps those in peril and also seeks his brother.

What he finds is gruesome, more gruesome than the zombie and revanant, a wendigo. He has to find a way to destroy it even though they can't be killed. By his side is a young lady who insisted on joining him. Together they make a cute team.

There are equal helpings of horror, gore and mystery. The characters are lively and the world building is amazing! I'm definitely checking out the next book in the series.

Sisters Arcana by Ken Janssens

Great audiobook for the family!

My Review:
This story is perfect for a family vacation travelling by car. The plot and characters are entertaining. I wasn't fond of the narrator as many times she sounded mechanical but did get better with the progression of the story.

Nova is a young lady with a wild imagination and when Sammy goes missing she takes on the act of figuring out what happened and is encountered by a plethora of problems that prevent her from solving the mystery, including her sister Rowan. Rowan is a typical teen whose main concern in life is Mitchell the boy she has a massive crush on. When he goes missing to she jumps into action becoming her sister's accomplice.

There's plenty of action and suspense along with aliens and other strange characters to keep the story moving along.

Matanzas Moon by Elizabeth Raven

One of my top reads this year!

My Review:

Loved it! Where do I start? Each page is filled with mystery, suspense and a growing romance that has it's up and downs. Bridget moved to St. Augustine when she didn't get into Vet School and after suffering vivid dreams about the animals she helped at the vet clinic she worked in. In the historic streets of St. Augustine she opens a mystic shop called Lunatique. I live close to the city and spend as much time there as possible and her shop is perfect for this city. It's shrouded in mystery, pirates and ghosts. The author couldn't have chosen a better location for this story and for locals it's perfection.

Bridget meets Nick when a brawl erupts in a local bar. Nick is the police officer to the rescue and Bridget literally runs into him trying to escape the bar. A night or so later a mysterious woman visits Lunatique, crying and upset, Bridget tries to calm her and sends her home with a bag of goods to vanquish her misery and refresh her life. Not long after Bridget is awoke by a girl running down the street, her clothes tattered and in tears Bridget lets her in Lunatique and the police are called. Nick shows up and they find the goods sent home with the mysterious women are found at the crime scene where the girl was attacked. So how are the incidents related? It gets better when Bridget realizes she's clairvoyant and sees ghosts. Somehow the attacks are related to an unsettled spirit.

Nick and Bridget didn't start out on the right foot and every step forward ends with two steps backwards. To make their relationship even more complicated Bridget makes friends with RIP, a local ghost tour guide. He's outgoing and charming. Nick is the protective, brooding type and RIP causes ripples in their developing relationship.

The story moves easily and flawlessly from one scene to the next and the mystery is cleverly woven into the story with a few plot twists that took me by surprise. I've been to all the locations mentioned in the book and easily imagined all this happening. Elizabeth Raven didn't leave anything out when describing the city and it's hot spots.

Amazing story!

Cut & Run by Traci Hohenstein Audiobook Review

Really fabulous read!

Review:

I made the mistake of buying book 3 first so I've never read the first two and I applaud the author because I had no problem keeping up with the story. Rachel owns and runs Florida Omni Search where he assists police in finding missing persons. This is especially important to her after losing her daughter Mallory who was abducted when she was just 3 years old. Rachel chases ghosts and follows leads but none bring her closer to finding her daughter.

In this book Matt is assaulted, hit in the head then his wife is killed and children abducted. Rachel's job is to assist him in finding his children and who did the crime. It's a clever story with a great plot that builds at a steady pace.

The only part of this book that didn't fit or caught me off guard was the narrator had a northern U.S. accent and the story takes place in the southern U.S. It was difficult to imagine them eating boiled peanuts and speaking as if they lived in the north. Otherwise Angela Dawe is a good narrator.

For anyone who loves a good mystery this is a book to read or listen to.

A Long Time Dead by Wondra Vanian Audiobook

Loaded with great stories!

My Review:
This book contains a series of short stories, each is exciting and written with an expert hand. They kept on edge waiting for the next one. This was my first experience with this author but not the last as I'll happily read anything of hers again.

My favorite story was one about a young couple expecting their first child. They've just moved into a new home but the house has a bit of history. The wife starts seeing a little girl in a red dress and hearing strange sounds. it all climaxes into a suspenseful ending.

I'm a huge lover of short stories and will be looking for more from this author.

Hopatcong Vision Quest by Steve Lindahl Audiobook Review

Great story, believable characters!

My Review:

In this story two women who live on opposites sides of the same lake are murdered in a similar way. Other than where they live they have little in common. One woman is much older, widowed and has a grown daughter. The other woman is much younger, married and has a 9 year old daughter.

The families of both women over the course of a year grow a close bond as they undergo therapy that takes them into their past lives. Through this process they find they all belong to the same spiritual circle and through sessions undercover the murderer and much more. The last cycle of death was three hundred years ago in a native american village. I love how the author went from the past to the present. Both seemed so real.

This is the second book I've listened to with the author also narrating, overall, he did a very good job, great pacing, even narrator tone and he brought a little more character to the story I think than reading it alone would have.

There's plenty of twists and small details in the story. In order to appreciate them all I will most likely listen to this one again. I absolutely enjoyed it!

Devil's Lake: Bittersweet Hollow Book 1 by Aaron Paul Lazar

Great story, tons of suspense!

My Review:

This is an intense story from the get go. Porsha is on her last leg home after being held captive for two years. She's greeted by her neighbor Boone who is tending the farm in her parents absence. She soon learns her mother has cancer and both her parents are in New York for her treatment.

Porsha is a complete mess and the descriptions are very strong and moving. As the story progresses her parents come home as her mom's cancer is in remission. As a family they work through Porsha's captivity, giving the gruesome details.

The book is filled with suspense and the author did a nice job with it. If you have a weak stomach this might not be a story for you. I love gruesome with taste so it was right up my alley. I wished more of the gruesome was mixed into the story more instead large, bold chunks but either was a great listen.

The narrator did an amazing job with everything from pacing to changing up per character.

The Patchwork Man by DB Martin Audiobook Review

Clever story that's most definitely worth listening too!

Review:

This story is about Lawrence Juste, a lawyer who is brought a young man Danny who is accused of a crime. His job is to get Danny off. As he digs into the case more and more is revealed starting with his life as a child.

When Lawrence was just a child his parents had too many children and little means to take care of them all. The government stepped in and split up the children. Lawrence went to a home along with other of his siblings and while there learns life the hard way. As the story progresses more of his life and its secrets are revealed.

The story is clever and suspenseful. Not nail biting suspenseful but enough to pique the reader/listener and keep them posted. The plot unravels like a slow death to Lawrence. There are elements in the story many authors wouldn't broach but this author did and with taste.

The narrator Rob Groves does a great job. His voice is easy and steady. I wish he'd changed his pacing more to match the story but overall no complaints. This is an excellent story and written well.

I definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy mystery, suspense and thrillers!

NanoWrimo 2016

For three years straight I participated in Nwnowrimo but this year I've chosen not to.

I love Nsno and regardlesss of not joining I'm 20,000 words into my next release. The second Bloobseeker book, The Monster Upstairs. It's coming along nicely and I encourage all Nanomers to continue.

My first Nano book was Eye of the Storm, since two books have followed, completing the trilogy. Write, write and write. Book 3 published and a spinoff series on its way after I complete The Monster Upstairs and Prison of the Past Baby Girl 7 and the final book in the series. The spinoff series is YA horror, titled Evan's Girls. The first book starts with the most unlikely victim of the serial killer.

Keep writing and let your imagination go wild. Enjoy Nano and support all those working on their masterpiece :-)

Love you all, keep writing!

The Masterpiecers by Olivia Wildenstein Audiobook Review

I finished this book a week ago but have been slow at getting a review written. It's a great book just busy.

My Review:
Sisters Ivy and Aster are caught in the middle of a scheme. Aster's in prison for murder and Ivy's on her way to join the hit show Masterpiecers. A show where artists complete for money through a series of activities displaying their skills. That doesn't sound all that exciting but intrigue is carefully woven into the story creating a great story.

The story flips between Aster and Ivy developing their characters. and the plot. At first the connection isn't evident whether on purpose or not but there was enough suspense to keep me listening. Narrator Catherine Wenglowski did a good job with her performance and I enjoyed the story.

For anyone who enjoys a good mystery then check this one out.

Lady's Slipper by Alison Gray Audiobook Review

Lady's Slipper is one of the best mystery books I've listened to or read this year!

My Review:
What a fantastic mystery! This book kept me on the edge. Abby is a single mom and investigator who is given the case. Kathy Walker’s murderer is about to be released from prison and she’s re-investigating. There’s nonstop action and intrigue as she talks with those connected in any way with the crime. Kathy Watson’s daughter Caleigh is now an adult but as a two year old she was present when her mother was murdered. She struggles throughout the story to remember.

The story is British and I enjoyed the various differences in terminology in the English language as opposed to the U.S. version. At times it was a puzzle in itself to figure out the meaning of the word. No need to worry plenty of context clues. The narrator Carrie Goodwiler performance was top notch. She did various accents depending on the character and where they were from as well as adding a nasally touch when a character fell ill with a cold. She went the extra mile to make this already fabulous story even better.

A plus mystery!

The Lost Eve of the Serpent by Jeremy Phillips Blog Tour

I know this sounds crazy when I say it, but I think my sister Rose really is Sherlock Holmes.  How else can I credit what she achieved, during that long, strange summer of 1893?  And when she was still only a girl of fifteen, no less?  I mean, who ever heard of a girl of fifteen being a Detective?

The trouble started quickly.  My family and I were minding our own business (that business being the opening of our hotel, the Delacroix), when the Emerald Serpent jewels showed up.  They had come all the way from China, but they weren’t in our hotel safe for even twenty-four hours before somebody stole them.  What’s worse, the blame for their theft fell right on my brother Bill, who was minding the hotel front desk when the jewels disappeared.  Pretty soon, it seemed as though the whole town of Hope Springs was out to get him.  Our hotel business fell right off, what with everybody in the area believing that the Delacroix family was a bunch of thieves.  Dad was afraid we might even have to sell off our hotel.

But then Rose stepped in.  Rose was interested in the Sherlock Holmes stories, and more than anything she wanted to be a detective when she grew up.  Before I even had time to think about it, Rose and I were both trying to find the person who had really stolen the jewels.  It was the right thing for us to be doing, but I knew we’d have to get it done quick.  Poor Bill was already locked up in the town jail, and I had a bad feeling that if he wasn’t freed soon, some town hothead was going to do something a lot worse than wait for him to go to trial…

Interview
Questions with Jeremy Phillips

Why do you write?
I write because I enjoy it, and I feel compelled to express my ideas in written form. I have always been a big reader, and I enjoy exploring the idea of writing, creating stories that I would find myself reading if I were the one doing the reading.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
I always create an outline for how I want the story to go, but then when I am writing the story, it always organically changes from that outline into something else, hopefully something better. I think that if I found myself writing something that didn’t change somewhat and offer itself up to alteration as I am writing it, then I would know that I’m just going through the motions. That would probably be time for me to stop writing that story, at least for the day. Perhaps forever. Some stories just don’t make it, they are dead on arrival, and it’s important for me to be honest with myself when that happens and try something else instead.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
The hardest thing about my new book, and perhaps the most fun thing, was doing some good research on the historical period in which it is set. The story is set in 1893, so we’re talking post-Old West stuff. It’s not the chaotic Gunslinger West, but it also isn’t the modern America, either. So that’s an interesting time to write about, as there would have been elements of both, Old West and Modern, present in such a time and place. And often, those two elements would not get along nicely.

How did you develop the idea for ‘The Rose Delacroix Files Book One: The Lost Eye of the Serpent’?

To be honest, I originally wrote the story with the idea in mind that the kid detectives in the story would be younger than they ended up being. But as I started to write the story, I realized that if Rose and Jon were actually fifteen years old, then they would be on the cusp of adulthood. People grew up fast in those long-ago days, and these kids would be expected to be nearly adults at that age. With the two protagonists as near-adults, the story ends up being much richer and more interesting. Rose would be expected to be looking around for a suitor to marry and start a family with, either that year or in her very near future. This is an expectation that Rose rejects soundly, as she has a much more modern view of what a woman can be and can do. She ends up rejecting a lot of expectations of her time, and for the reader, that will give them a window into her world, too.

What is your main character like?

My main character is Rose Delacroix, who is a young woman of fifteen, who stubbornly believes that women can do the same things that men can do, if they feel like it. In her case, that involves wanting to become a detective like her hero, Sherlock Holmes. As the story develops, especially throughout the other books in the series, she will grow into becoming something larger than that; but at first her intention is to become like Sherlock Holmes. The story is told through the eyes of her brother Jon, who is her twin brother, and who takes an almost Watson-like role in Rose’s story, to Rose’s Sherlock Holmes.
