Good Bones by L.A. Kelley

A ghostly tale!

My Review:
I enjoyed the whole concept of a psychologist using her skills to assist a ghost. Such an original idea. Katherine is a psychologist who gets entangled with a detective Jake. Jake buys an older house that needs a little work but he feels is worth it until he's haunted by a ghost. At first he's freaked out and even moves out of the house until he meets Katherine and they decide maybe the ghost isn't all bad. At the same time there's a budding romance between them.

The author does a great job in developing the characters and furthring the plot. There were a few twists, some I expected but also a wow! No spoilers here, you have to read it! The plot itself has layers keeping my listening ears invested. The narrator has a natural flow with the story and a good cadance.

This isn't just a great ghost story but a really amazing cozy mystery!

Witch You Well by Colleen Gross

Fun, light-hearted mystery!

Review:
Sen is a witch in a dying town founded by her ancestors because it sits atop a magic vortex. She's an out of practice witch who is annoyed by her spunky aunt. She works at the newspaper but rarely is there and is engaged to the current mayor and long time boyfriend. Her family is having a grand opening to their hotel as they're trying to bring income to the dying town. When someone dies the day of the grand opening things get a little sticky.

Her ornary aunt was really my favorite character and the only one who seemed to have a handle on things. I also enjoyed the ghost grandmother, neat twist. Overall the book is fun and light. It's something that can be listenened to with someone any age. The narrator's voice didn't quite cut it for me. She was too airy sounding.

Overall it's a cute story. Not at all a bad choice for a family road trip.

Deadman on Campus by E.M. Kaplan

As soon as I started listening I recognized the unforgettable character.

My Review:

I recognized the character as soon as I started listening but not the authors name. Years ago I read one of her Josie Tucker mysteries. They're fun, light-hearted and entertaining. Josie is a blogger with a food obsession and a penchant for solving mysteries. She's brought in to solve a mystery on a college campus as a student.

Josie is a memorable character and a spit fire. Her life and mind revolve around food which oddly enough it what helps her solve the mystery. While posing as a student she meets a variety of students who add a colorful array to the cast. The story is fast paced and an easy listen that kept me laughing.

Serenity by Craig A Hart

A bit cliche but still entertaining!

My Review:
Shelby is a retired divorced gentleman involved with a much younger woman. I really disliked his daughter. She was far too whiny but I liked Shelby OK. He finds himself involved in a mystery.

There is a good bit of suspense in the story, enough to keep me entertained. The author builds character and the relationships of those characters. The pace is steady, building as the plot comes to finality.

One of my favorite characters is Shelby's girlfriend. Loved her! I could see this being a very successful series based on the characters alone!

A Field of Red by Greg Enslen

The jury's still out on this one.

My Review:
This book had a slower pace. Frank is an ex-cop who specialized in missing children yet he refuses tvbvo assist in a local case when girl's start disappearing. He's an alcoholic who'd rather have his lips to a bottle than help.

I didn't like Frank much. He seemed pretty worthless to me, eventually he helps. I hope that's not a spoiler but I think any reader who starts the story will figure that out on their own.
The mystery in the story was solid and kept me listening. There's sufficient suspense most of the way through.

The plot stalls at times but is easy to follow. It's a decent book and those who love cozy mystery will most likely enjoy the story.

Death by Honeymoon by Jaden Skye

Started slow but got better!

My Review:
The first chapters dragged on and on. They weren't too exciting but there was enough mystery I didn't quit. Glad I didn't the story gets very intriguing.

Cindy marries Clint, the man of her dreams and they honeymoon in Barbados. He turns up dead. For weeks she's depressed and falls in on herself. Her sister comes to visit ad takes care of her until she's injured when the brakes in Cindy's car fail.

After that is where it gets good. Clint's family is horrible and treat Cindy as though she's guilty of something. But more people associated with Clint and his company begin dying which sends Cindy packing and back to Barbados.

Once there the plot thickens and she's in peril yet doesn't back down and the story takes on a faster pace.

All and all an entertaining mystery!

Scraps of Paper by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Cute story!

Review:
Cozy mystery isn't my normal genre but this book was a nice break. Abigail moves to a small town and into a house where the previous residents disappeared. She finds notes from the daughter tucked into the strangest places. I liked the uniqueness and idea of finding those and thought about what I would do in that situation.Abigail sets out to solving the mystery of what happened to the former residents of the home. I probably would have done the same thing out of curiosity.

As she sets about solving this mystery she runs into some very interesting characters. They are full and vibrant. I especially liked Myrtle and eccentric older woman filled with surprises. There's some suspense but it's really mellow. I was waiting for something a bit more extreme and it never happened. The flow of the story is easy to follow and lighthearted.

For anyone who really enjoys the "Murder She Wrote" type of fiction this book falls right into that category.

Her Man in Havana by Fran Conner Book Review

What an enjoyable read! I loved it.

My Review:
Her Man in Havana is a fantastic read! The setting is Cuba and Harry is a resident of the UK and is there on business to make a rum and cigar deal and tour their factory. Simple right? Not so simple. He meets the gorgeous Maria, a translator and instantly falls for her. The simple deal turns into a huge ordeal as it snowballs out of control in political epic proportions.

This book is written is first person so we know his thoughts as the story moves and even when Harry is facing imminent death his thoughts kept me laughing. It’s a fast-paced action, romance, and mystery novella. The author kept the pace going at a steady speed yet still developed each scene fully with small setting details throughout so I had a nice picture of what was happening and where. I highly recommend this book. It was a riot!

The Bride Wore Dead by E.M. Kaplan book review

The Bride Wore Dead is a book I've been looking forward to reading. I even placed it on my Must-Reads for 2015 list. I wasn't disappointed, enjoyable read!

My Review:

The Bride Wore Dead by E.M.Kaplan is a hysterical murder-mystery. Josie Tucker is a food columnist who gets thrown into a wedding as a bride’s maid because the dress fits. Soon after the wedding the bride turns up dead from a bee sting. This leads the husband’s mother to seek Josie and infiltrate the ranch the couple was staying at for their honeymoon. Josie isn’t a detective but needs money and retreat time so accepts the offer.

Kaplan has created a spicy, lovable character with Josie Tucker. She is a tiny built, Asian lady with stomach issues. Her doctor and long time friend Drew is the man she loves, only he doesn’t know it. Josie is a prickly character. Warm fuzzies aren’t her style. Josie’s personality draw out the comedy in this book as she bumbles through solving the “murder”.

For lovers of mystery, comedy and strong female protagonists The Bride Wore Dead is a sure love!

Brain to Books Blog Tour

Fast Facts:

Author: Nancy Lynn Jarvis
Genre:Cozy mystery
Books:  The Murder House of the Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries Series

Bio

Nancy JarvisNancy Lynn Jarvis thinks you should try something new every few years. Writing her Regan McHenry Real Estate Mysteries series is her newest adventure and she’s been having so much fun doing it that she’s finally acknowledged she’ll never sell another house. She let her license lapse in May of 2013, after her twenty-fifth anniversary in real estate.
After earning a BA in behavioral science from San Jose State University, she worked in the advertising department of the San Jose Mercury News. A move to Santa Cruz meant a new job as a librarian and later a stint as the business manager for Shakespeare Santa Cruz at UCSC.
To keep her writing fresh after four mysteries, she took a time out to write Mags and the AARP Gang, a comedy about a group of renegade octogenarian bank robbers and editCozy Food: 128 Cozy Mystery Writers Share Their Favorite Recipes. But she missed her husband and wife team of Regan and Tom and their friend Dave, a former police officer forced to become a Santa Cruz Police Ombudsman after losing an eye in a shoot-out, so much that she came back to mystery writing.

Accomplishments

When she’s not writing, Nancy is a volunteer driver for Grey Bears which provides a once-a-week bag of groceries for seniors and organized a fundraiser titled Mysteries for Myeloma using her books to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. She also frequently donates books for fundraisers if asked.

Blurb

Halloween pumpkin lanterns in haunted house gardenEvery community has a house that people walk by hurriedly, nervously peeking at it out of the corners of their eyes. Bonny Doon is no exception. A bloody double homicide occurred in the Murder House almost twenty years ago and the killer has eluded capture ever since. Recently the house was inherited and the new owner wants to sell.
The problem is no one wants to buy a house with a reputation and reports that it’s home to ghosts. The seller thinks Realtor Regan McHenry would make a perfect listing agent ― after all, with her penchant for playing amateur sleuth, she’s no stranger to murder.
This is the perfect mystery to read if you don’t believe in ghosts — and an even better mystery to read if you do.

Book Review

Written by Caraotta "TOP 1000 REVIEWER" on February 10, 2014
The old saying "never judge a book by its cover" is certainly applicable for Nancy Lynn Jarvis's book The Murder House. As Realtor Regan McHenry takes on the task of creatively marketing the murder house where a double murder took place almost 2 decades ago, her initial cozy look and feel of the house would evaporate by a series of events and calamities.
As young eccentric Stevie purchases the house his relatives become evident most notably his murder victim father Roger Commons. Just who was the murderer years ago and could this be linked to the murder victim found buried near the property? This Bonny Doon home would serve a severe lesson also to any innocent victim willing to barge in uninvited. Realtor Regan McHenry will find herself moved in a detective type role where relationship dynamics will be uncovered and each layer will consistently confuse even the best of murder mystery solvers. Just when the evidence seems convincing will Jarvis throw a twist and more facts your way to keep you consistently off balance.
The murder mystery is "all in the family" inclusive and will get you wondering:
--Was it the demons that perpetrated vengeful killings...or was it troubled minds that took their free will choice to commit these horrible murders? You will discover Stevie's "Revenge Quest" war game did have glitches in the system that haven't been worked out...and now never will be. Whether it be repeated ghosts or neighbors strong imaginations-you will be left to decide when all is said or done.
Put on your murder mystery hat and be ready to get a full body workout. It will , like it did Regan, perhaps keep you up late at night. This clever Author has used her 25 year tenure as a Realtor in the Santa Cruz area to shape her scenarios with another fine book to her credit. Jarvis seemed to have made the best "move" of all leaving her full time realtor job to pursue her writing endeavors.

Excerpt

It was a pleasing house, cozy rather than spacious, like something Thomas Kincaid might have imagined for one of his paintings. The board and batten siding was painted a creamy color as comforting as a glass of warm milk. The window sashes were done in humble cranberry and the front door was a deep forest green set off by a polished brass kick-plate and equally bright handle trim that glinted in the afternoon sun.
Redwood trees towered behind the house and at its sides, stately green and brown sentinels, but the house was south facing so they didn’t cast a pall of shadows over it like they would have on a less perfectly situated dwelling. Trees had probably grown in front of the house at some point, too, given the nature of forests; if any had though, they had been removed.
Broad brick steps interspersed with pocket-sized patios that jutted into the manicured proximate gardens cascaded from the elevated house to the rich green lawns and guest parking below.
Regan climbed out of her car and took in the house and its surroundings.
“You’re picture perfect, aren’t you?” She spoke to the house as if it were an animate being. “You’re supposed to be a derelict with a cruel past, but you look comfortable and charming. When did that happen? When did you, the most notorious house in Bonny Doon, take up such welcoming and benign airs?”
She ducked back into her car, grabbed her briefcase, and started up the steps. She had done her research for the meeting — she liked being prepared — but had already decided her visit was as much about getting a read on the house and its owner as it was about getting the listing. If her instincts told her there was anything untoward about either of them, she’d take a pass.
She remembered walking into a house in Aptos once where the hair on the back of her neck stood up the moment she crossed the threshold. She had turned on her heel and fled — she couldn’t even preview the house, let alone show it to buyers — because there was something palpably cold and menacing that she sensed immediately. She planned to leave this house just as quickly if she picked up a similarly bad vibe.
Regan rang the doorbell and took a step backward, facing the door while she waited for the owner to open it, unwilling to turn her back on the house to enjoy the gardens like she would have done at any other property.
A brutal double murder had taken place inside the house almost two decades earlier and the killer had never been caught. One of the victims was a real estate broker, Roger Commons, a man she had met when she was in her early twenties and brand new to the business, who got by more on his charisma and good looks than his negotiating skills. The other victim was one of the house’s owners, a female client of his.
The coroner had determined both had died at the same time or at least so close together in time that it was impossible to determine who died first. The female owner’s throat had been slit, the realtor had been bludgeoned to death; but from the location of the bodies, the blood spatter in the bedroom where the owner’s body was found, and the gore that corresponded with the broker’s body in the entry foyer, it was clear they had not died together. There were rumors the house was haunted.
