Bestselling Vampire Series!

I woke up this morning and prepped my coffee than staggered half-awake not full of caffeine yet to my computer and got the crazy idea to check my yearly ebook sales. To see which book sold the best this year. It was a weird itch but I entertained it.

What I found was The Monster Upstairs sold more copies digitally than any other book. The week it was released almost as many copies of The Vampires Next Door sold, making this my best selling series. I can't say I was surprised.

The release of Scarlett wasn't far behind. That impressed me since it was released at the absolute worst time for an indie author -- November.

When I released The Vampires Next Door it sold like wildfire, staying in top rankings for almost 3 months. No it didn't make any list that counts to the public but entered my bestselling hall of fame.

This information tells me I'm in good shape to release the Ghost Within. The first and second drafts of the book are finished. Right now I'm putting on finish touches before I send it to my editor.

I'm really excited to release this book. I think its my best YA story. Parts of it give me chills and goosebumps. Unlike most people fear doesn't do that to me. It's the ah-ha moments when they realize everything is bigger than they ever imagined and sad moments. Yes, I get goosbumps during sad parts. The movie Pearl Harbor gave me chills from beginning to end.

The Bloodseekers is an epic saga and considering its sales gives me the notion that ending it with a third book won't make readers happy. From the time I wrote the first book I had an itch to write more books, individual stories about side characters and the legend. Now I'm convinced I should. There are so many layers to the story steeped in lore and magic. I could easily write another several novella's related to the series but not part of the series since it ends in March 13th.

It's really not about book sales but readers and making them happy, giving them an epic story they can sink into.

I was side-tracked for a minute. The Bloodseekers also sells best at reader cons. In fact I sold out at every book signing this year but two.

The first book in ebook can be picked up for free and The Ghost Within is on pre-order sale for .99!

The Monster Upstairs Background

The sequel to The Vampires Next Door is almost here. Release date set for March 7th. This series is home to me. The only series I have currently placed in a setting close to my home -- St. Augustine Florida.

In similar fashion there are places of interest noted in The Monster Upstairs. These places exist. In this book the Slayers find themselves not beneath St. Augustine but Jacksonville, sister city to St. Augustine.

Help support the release please share this post and/or support the Headtalker https://headtalker.com/campaigns/bloodseekers-in-st-augustine/

These underground tunnels really exist and some are open to tours. The transportation tunnels here made for a nasty adventure for Alison and the acquaintance of a new creature -- Alistair the Boghart,

Excerpt:
She found the voice. It was attached to an odd looking creature with wild brown hair, a large nose, and round cheeks peering at her with two outstretched hands from a hole in the bricks no more than a foot or so above her head. Another set off blades hit the ground and she jumped, reaching for the creature’s hands. He grasped them and pulled her upward while she planted her feet along the wall and climbed it.
“’Bout time. Follow me,” he said as he crawled through the small space. It was large enough for him to crawl, as he was no larger than a four-year-old child. She felt like a giant and had to wriggle on her belly, her ribs throbbing with each movement, and the dampness soaking through her shirt and jeans. She was glad she wore old clothes and running shoes for her little venture. The gunk coating the crawl space oozed through her fingers as she clutched between the bricks to get to the other side.
What's happening? demanded Rodham.
It was a booby trap. I'm OK.
The creature jumped out of the space and grabbed her hands, pulling her out. She was impressed with his strength as she tumbled out of the tunnel onto her butt and the gunky ground of yet another tunnel. He was no more than half her height and she wasn't exactly tall at five foot three inches.
“Thank you,” she said, lifting her aching body off the ground. She felt like an old woman and desired a long, hot bath filled with bubbles and the scent of strawberry or vanilla, anything but the nasty odor that coated every inch of her body and made her cringe.

“It's not every day I find a young lass traveling these tunnels,” he muttered. “Or anyone...” he finished, his voice trailing off.

But those aren't the only tunnels used in the book. There are also tunnels beneath Jacksonville that contain bank vaults. They're still used today for tours and businesses.
And in St. Augustine style there is a battle in one of the existing forts. A small fort called Fort Matanzas.
The picture purchased as the fort is closed due to damage from Hurricane Matthew.

The background on the book cover also contains a draw bridge from one of the forts.

Ending A Series Procrastination

Since finishing The Monster Upstairs, Book 2 in the Bloodseeker Series my creative mind been playing this horrible procrastination game.

The next book I have scheduled for release is Baby Girl 7 Prison of the Past in June 2017.  I started the book, wrote a couple thousand words then my mind switched gears on me. Author TL Katt invited me to write a story for her 2017 Winter Thrillz so I wrote the entire story in 3 days. It's my first writing venture into paranormal romance. All that is great but the book won't be released until Dec. 2017. So why write it now? It wasn't my intention but happened.

A tiny plug on TL. She designed the cover for The Monsters Upstairs (cover reveal coming soon) and has done many teasers for me in the past, including a few below and the Zombie Girl cover which she's modifying for the series.

After finishing that story I pulled up Prison of the Past and wrote another thousand words or so and had a great idea for Zombie Girl. A story I wrote for the Once Upon a Zombietale Anthology released almost a year ago. I've had readers inquire about the characters and ask if it will be part of a much larger story or even a series. The characters kept talking and I almost tripled the word count. It looks like Zombie Girl fans are getting a series titled the Zombie Girl. The first book Premonition is being edited along with The Monster Upstairs, Book 2 in the Bloodseeker Series.

I wouldn't call what's going on writer's block. It's more like end of series, saying good bye to Cleo block. She's always been an easy character for me to slip into and write but her story must come to an end and the entire book is in my head but wouldn't come out. It's hard to say goodbye to a loved one and that's how my mind has perceived it so it keeps pushing the story away and bringing others to the front.

Cleo's journey is filled with tears, happiness, sarcasm and the struggle of a young girl who becomes a pretty amazing adult. She isn't perfect and can be a little self-serving but also puts herself in life and death situations for those she loves. The final book takes her life full circle blasting into the only mystery remaining. When I think about it I realize she avoided solving this mystery much as I have avoided writing this final book.

The mystery is one many readers expected when purchasing and reading Book 5 but it wasn't the time. The time has now come for her to put the clues together and go one one last adventure that is filled with self-discovery. My mind is finally ready to write the story because it realizes this is simply the ending to a brand new beginning.

Ever Near by Melissa MacVicar Audiobook Review

Most definitely one of the top YA books I've listened to this year.

My Review:

I'm a huge fan of ghost stories and loved this story! Jade is a normal teen except she see's ghosts. It's something she keeps to herself as she assumes everyone will think she's nuts if they knew including her best friend. The ghosts are creepy, mean and ugly -- something out of a nightmare.

Her mother engaged they move into Fairever in Nantucket with the fiance and his two sons. That brings up more problems as a creepy ghost she calls Lacy haunts the house and her. She also has a massive crush on the youngest son Charlie who will soon be her step brother.

The story unfolds at a good pace, adding to the suspense and written first person builds Jade's character making come alive. There's a little humor and a touch of romance making this a story it's hard to put down.

A big part of audiobooks for me is the narrator and Melissa Redmond gave the story more character and life.

Sparks and Flames by CS Patra Audiobook Review

Great Read!

Review:
The setting is in the future. The world has changed dramatically and a new structure and society has formed. The wealthy live in the hills, amongst them are elementals – people who have abilities to wield Earth’s elements. The most feared of the elementals are those who wield fire. Below the hills live the poor humans who have no power over the elements. There is a group who live in this area called the Velt who hunt and slay the fire starters.

Kian is a hunter and Rukia is a fire starter but they don’t know this about each other. Their friendship blossoms into a romance. The story between them is sweet. It’s not so much a cautionary tale as being able to look past our differences to see our likenesses. I enjoyed the story and listening to the innocent love develop between these characters.

The narrator Jonathon Johns did a great job. Each character had their own voice, his pace was steady with the story.

Great story!

The Sapphiran Agenda Prequel to the Star Trails Tetralogy

I have read the entire Star Trails Tetralogy by Marcha Fox and loved it! The series is full of suspense, action and great characters. The Sapphiran Agenda is Thyron's story. Thyron is a plant who has conscious thought, communicates through psi waves and walks! He's an awesome plant.

My review:

The Sapphiran Agenda is Thyron’s story. Thyron is an intelligent mobile plant. He communicates with others through psi waves and implanting pictures or words into the heads of other beings. He’s a very cool plant. This story is a spin-off from the Star Trails Tetralogy. Thyron is first introduced in Beyind the Hidden Sky the first book in the series. The Sapphiran Agenda is the situation we meet him in the series but from his point of view.

I loved the subtle comedy and the development of Thyron’s character. March Fox brings his personality to life. He is a lovable character who has his own agenda in the little adventure that takes him to another planet where he meets Creena. I won’t give away any spoilers. It’s a book that needs to be read. I’ll admit its suspenseful! I read it while travelling on vacation and couldn’t put it down until I finished it!

The author has a way of bringing the reader into the sci-fi world she created and placing them into the story. The science is plausible. As a science teacher I dig that. I’ve been turned off by sci-fi that isn’t realistic. Her books are credible adding to the believability and creativity of the story. She gives plenty of background while at the same time building the plot. As one of my favorite authors I wait for her to release another book related to the series.

Miri Castor Opal Charm The Path to Dawn

Meet Miri Castor

Elle: Tell a little about yourself.

Miri: I’m in my twenties, born and raised in Brooklyn! I’m in my fourth year of college, and I’ve been studying biochemistry since freshman year. In my free time, I’m either working in the lab, revising a story, or watching my favorite TV shows, one of them How to Get Away with Murder; I indulge in Netflix shows too, like Black Mirror and Sense8. I enjoy reading action adventure and scifi fantasy books, but paranormal and horror books have become my guilty pleasures.

Elle:  What can you tell us about Opal Charm: The Path to Dawn?

Miri: Opal Charm: The Path to Dawn is a novel I first wrote in the sixth grade. It’s a scifi fantasy, YA novel, but I think the content hits home for many adults around my age, and adults in general. Older teenagers can also relate to the protagonist’s social struggles as well. I had to revise it four times-twice in high school, twice in college. One of its major themes is to learn to accept the truth and that denying yourself of it not only hurts yourself, but the people around you.

Elle: What was your inspiration for your novel, Opal Charm: The Path to Dawn?

Miri: I had many inspirations, I’ll compress them into three points. My first was the video games I played as a child, mainly Square Enix games. Their themes for my favorite game, Kingdom Hearts, really resonated with me. One of the general themes of Opal Charm, finding a balance between light and darkness, actually comes from this! My second inspiration was my own struggle in high school being a passive-aggressive doormat. I let people walk all over me to keep them happy. As a result, I channeled my frustrations into my protagonist, Opal. She said all the things I wanted to say when people blantly disrespected me; I gave her the encyclopedia of curse words. Fortunately, I mellowed out towards my freshman year of college. That brings me to my last inspiration, early life in college.
I moved from lively Brooklyn to a collegetown practically in the middle of nowhere. Brooklyn is also a diverse city and my campus has a small population of black students. I felt isolated and depressed, I thought I wasn’t ever going to feel better. Part of the reason why I revised Opal Charm the fourth time was to encourage myself and cope with the isolation. I’m hoping that it can inspire people who are feeling- or have felt the same way-to reach out to people; I also want help those who are trying to escape that gaping pit of loneliness.

Elle: What genre do you write and why?

Miri: Mainly scifi/and or fantasy. They are the first genres that left a mark on me. I write in those genres because it gives me boundless creativity for my stories. I can create anything I want, and then justify it with a bit of science so it isn’t too far-fetched. Most importantly, scifi and fantasy have always been sort of a background genre for me; they help me create an unique setting while I focus in on more human (or non-humans in the context of my novel) issues. Of course, you have to tie it into the plot imaginatively.

Elle: If a fiction writer, is any part of your book based on events in your life?

Miri: Yep! Opal’s school life at a parsimonious Catholic school is based on my years at such a Catholic school. The Thanksgiving Day Feast towards the book’s end reflects my own experiences during my lunch periods. I’m not bashing on Catholic schools, though! They made me the resourceful, well-rounded person I am today.

Elle: What was the greatest challenge you faced with publishing your work?

Miri: Well it’s not officially published yet, so I’ll say what my greatest challenge is now-amassing interested readers. I have an idea of who’d be interested in my novel, but I know they’re primarily glued to hipster blogs on Tumblr, getting in on the latest Twitter feud, and liking pictures of food and sunsets on Instagram. Marketing is tedious and if not done properly, an author can end up investing money in something that they can’t get a financial and emotional profit from; even if a handful people go wild for my novel, I would make some emotional profit.

Elle: Do you have a favorite author or book?

Miri: So many. Currently, it’s Octavia Butler and her book Kindred. It’s a refreshing read from the many scifi books that tell the same story of a jaded, male protagonist who deals with the non-Earthlike world they live in. Butler’s writing style is fluid and descriptive, which is what I strive to have.

Elle: Describe yourself in three words.

Miri: Pensive, considerate, funny!

Elle: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Miri: The island of Dominica. It’s a small island, the locals are friendly, and it’s a peaceful place. It’s also a good place for writers to focus on their work, there are very little distractions compared to collegetown and New York.

    Blurb:

Past Life StrifeBlackbird may seem like any other small Midwestern town, but the bland and unremarkable façade hides a dark and deadly secret. The Discordant, creatures from the realm of Chaos, lurk in the shadows, preying upon the souls of Blackbird’s unsuspecting residents.
As an Observer, Seth is tasked with identifying the lost before they fall victim to the Discordant. An unenviable job under normal circumstances, but the situation takes a turn for the worse when Blackbird’s Guardian calls it quits and no new Guardian is available to take her place. Instead, Seth now finds himself partnered with Desmond, a powerful and intimidating Warrior, who worries that Seth will give in to the lure of Chaos. Desmond’s fears are all but validated when a magical disturbance draws even more Discordant to the area. Among them is Amara, a dangerous and nearly invincible femme fatale from Seth’s past.
To stop her, Seth must sacrifice his own soul or put all of his faith in a psychic’s vague prediction. But without a Guardian, both the Observer and Warrior are at a disadvantage and time is running out.

Excerpt from Past Life Strife

Chapter 4

Demons, Drinks, & Dames

Okay, I gotta admit, but don’t you dare tell nobody, bartending ain’t half bad. I kinda got a kick outta being the guy with the magic happy juice. All that melancholy and woe is me stuff that knocked me over when I first showed up was beginning to fade. In its place? Temporary happiness, liquid courage, and the promise of all kinds of bad decisions and poor judgment calls in the makin’. I could seriously get down with this. Chaos is chaos and I ain’t picky.
Quote 1Of course, there was all this cleanin’ and crap that I wasn’t too fond of. Again, I cursed Desmond for binding me. Well, I verbally cursed him, seein’ as he left me just enough bippity to keep the humans from knowin’ my true form, but no boppity boo for anythin’ else. With my magic, I wouldn’t’ve had to worry about the mundane stuff like washin’ glasses, or running outta bottles, or changing out kegs. But since I didn’t have it, I had to run my butt off and keep the place from fallin’ into chaos. Oh, the irony!
All this work weren’t leavin’ me with a lot of time to chat up the ladies neither. I mean, come on, that’s the number one perk of this crummy job, ain’t it? Even when I wasn’t runnin’ my tookus off and tryin’ to keep up with the amount of cheap domestic these cretins guzzled, it was slim pickins for a man of my refined tastes. Seemed to me like this town’s primary export was sausage, if ya get my meaning. But just when I started given up all hopes of seein’ some dames, I started believin’ in miracles ‘cuz these three smokin’ babes walked in. Now, I ain’t gonna lie, I’ve seen some hotties in my day. I mean, come on, I been working Hollywood since the invention of the talkie. But these three… Wowzers! All soft curves, long legs, and wavy hair, decked out in these gauzy little dresses that showed way too much sk-
Aw crap.
Just as I started to smooth down my shirt and ratchet my charm up to eleven, the ugly truth hit me. Three women (note: that’s a magical number), hotter than any I seen in a good long time, walk into a place like this and no one bats an eye? No one? I took an experimental sniff, hopin’ I was wrong, and nearly gagged. Earth magic. The scent of moss, herbs, dirt, and all that other hocus pocus-y crap invaded my nostrils. These weren’t no ladies. These broads was witches, and they was headed right for me.
Quote 2“Good evening, ladies,” I said, puffin’ out my chest and plasterin’ a big ol’ grin on my mug. Don’t ever let it be said that I don’t have grace under pressure, ‘cuz I’m the king of playin’ it cool. “What can I get started for yous dolls?”
“You’re not fooling anyone with that pathetic glamour, demon,” said the blonde one. She was definitely the leader. I could tell this because of the way the other two hung back, glarin’ at me like a couple of guard dogs waitin’ for the order to sic ’em. “Where’s Seth?” she asked, pointin’ a finger at me like she was gonna blast me with a bolt of lightning. I wasn’t worried though. Earth witches can’t do that. Least, I don’t think they can.
“Who’s Seth?”
“Don’t play games with us,” she warned, letting the stink of her magic increase until I had to step back. “You know what we are and you know what we will do if you try anything stupid.”
“Jeez Louise! Back off already!” I managed to choke as I took in another toxic mouthful of sage and lavender. Though I don’t know if that was the magic or her poor choice of perfume. “Yeah, I know what yous are. Ain’t no need for the whole death by aromatherapy thing ya got goin’, okay?”
Alright, dumb move, I admit it. Instead of backing off, she let loose with another round of choke the demon. I swear, if I never smell patchouli again in my life, it’ll be too soon.
“That was just a warning,” she hissed.
“Oh for the love of cheap tricks and cheaper booze, calm down, lady! If you can lay off your own ego for a moment, you’ll notice that I ain’t even tryin’ to attack you. Even if I wanted to, I can’t do jack squat.”
Quote 3“He’s right, Louise,” said the one on the left, a tiny little brunette with these ginormous ta-tas that she musta put some kind of a spell on, ‘cuz I couldn’t take my eyes off ‘em. “His magic has been bound.”
“Uh huh. Desmond bound me before he took off after the vamp. Wait a second.” I tore my eyes from the scenery and turned back to blondie. “Is your name really Louise?” That was actually kinda funny.
“Shut up!” maybe Louise snapped, tilting her head to the side, which made her look a lot like a dog who just heard his favorite squeaky toy. “Something isn’t right here.”
Yeah, no joke, blondie. Sheesh. I could’ve told you that without usin’ a drop of magic. She turned to the other two.
“What is that? What do you feel?”
“Something… we’re supposed to forget,” the redheaded one said, screwing up her face in concentration. “Very powerful magic.”
Order magic,” the brunette whispered.
Uh oh. See, here’s the thing about witches. All mystics, really. They can see things that most folks can’t. Like how these three knew I was a demon. Now, with some of ‘em, this works in our favor. It’s easier to get a lost soul to come on over to our side if they already know there’s more to life than meets the eye. But with these three, though, I had a bad feeling they was a little too cozy with the local Order and I didn’t wanna be no part of that.

Tell us a little about yourself.
What can I say about me? I’m a terribly boring individual. No really. I am the quintessential author hermit. I don’t own a television and were it not for the internet, I’d live in a cultural vacuum. I’ve always written, but you know, all authors say that, don’t they? There’s a reason for that. It’s because it’s true. Even as a wee child with a still developing imagination, I enjoyed creating my own fantasy worlds. What do I do when I’m not writing? Reading, mostly, but every so often, I come out of my crabby author shell and venture out into the real world. Out there, I tend to enjoy visiting art museums and finding new and interesting places to explore with my husband.
Is this your first book?
No, Past Life Strife is the seventh book I’ve written and the first book in my second set of series books. All total, I have nine books available with the tenth coming out hopefully around Halloween.
What genre is it and what is it about?
The series, Rise of the Discordant, is urban fantasy, but there is an element of humor throughout.
What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always wanted to write something in the same vein as Robert Asprin’s satirical ‘Myth’ series, but rather than take potshots at sword and sorcery, I felt it would be more fun to weave the humor into a genre that I love. I do acknowledge and even poke fun at some of the more popular urban fantasy tropes, but I’ve attempted to stay away from the low hanging fruit by keeping the story from turning into a paranormal romance. The series is actually made up of bits and pieces of other short stories that I’ve written, dating back to as early as 1998.
How did you come up with the title of your book or series?
I wanted all of the book titles in this series to be somewhat whimsical and quirky as a way to convey the humor aspect. As for the series name, Rise of the Discordant, well, that’s pretty much what the series is about. The Discordant are creatures of Chaos who are coming to our world in droves, looking to upset the balance of Order and takeover. This series revolves around the small Midwestern town that has become the unfortunate epicenter of this war.
Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?
I am my own cover artist. The painting on the cover was originally something I knocked out on a scrap of cardstock after taking a casual painting class with my husband for our anniversary. With a little bit of computer doctoring, I had something I liked. I’ve tried to continue with the same theme for the rest of the series, keeping the color and simple artistic elements the same.
If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?
Oh dear! For this book, that’s a toughie. I was asked to do this on another and the problem I have is that I live under a rock. Bogie at least is easy because while I was giving form to the character, I happened to be driving one day and saw a billboard advertising Howie Mandel’s standup performance at a nearby venue. From that day forward, Bogie was Howie Mandel. I even named his great uncle Howie in his honor. Now for the rest of the crew:
Seth-who’s that blonde guy everyone thinks is so pretty? (*does a quick Google search*) Ah, yes! Ryan Gosling. He’ll be my overworked and overstressed Observer.
Desmond- Given that Desmond is a Warrior and supposed to be huge, the easy answer would be Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson, however, I think he’s kind of overused for the tough guy. Instead, I’m going with Don Cheadle because I think he can pull off the straight man routine while also giving depth to some of the rare serious moments that do indeed get pretty serious.
The witches- This is also tough because I don’t know enough about young actors, but for Donna, I am going to take what might be a very unpopular stance and go with Lindsay Lohan. I don’t much pay attention to tabloids, but I need a redhead who can pull off both ‘sexy-witch’ and ‘super scary-tomboy.’ Louise might have to be a slightly older power player. I’m thinking Reese Witherspoon. She can pull off bossy like a… well, like a boss. And this just leaves Betty. You know there aren’t many brunette actresses out there. I’m giving this role to Kristen Stewart. She’ll be happy to know there is no lip biting required.
The Angel is simple: Tilda Swinton, nothing more really needs to be said on that subject.
And finally for my succubus baddie, Amara, I’m going with a Gothed out Mila Kunis because, really, who else is there?
Do you plot out your story lines or do you write on the seat of your pants?
A little of both. I’ll write an outline, but that’s mostly to get the idea out of my head and onto paper before I forget it. By the time I finish my first draft, I’ve usually written something so completely different that the outline can be saved for another day.
Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others?
Love scenes. Definitely. I don’t do graphic and if I include sex at all, it’s mostly implied. Even romantic scenes involving kissing are difficult. There’s only so many ways one’s heart can flutter or have their legs turn to jelly.
Who is your favorite character from your book and why? How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?
Bogie is by far my favorite character in this series. What’s not to love about a wisecracking lesser Demon with a heart of gold and atrocious grammar? I don’t actually have a least favorite in this series. So far, *knock on wood*, no one has given me fits.
What book do you wish you could have written?
My own first series, The Eyes of The Sun, but a couple of years earlier, while vampires were still the rage and the ebook market was brand new.
Do you read your reviews?
Read? Yes, absolutely. Reviews can offer a lot of critical feedback on what we’re doing right as well as wrong. Respond? Absolutely not. Even though I just said authors can learn from reviews, ultimately, they are a way for readers to tell other readers what they liked and disliked. I offer my email address at the back of every book. If someone wants to talk to me directly about what they did or didn’t like, they have an open avenue. As for how to deal with bad reviews, that’s simple. Everyone gets bad reviews. Even the top dogs who are making millions of dollars can’t please everyone. You can’t please everyone either. Sure, it may feel like a gut punch when you see a low rating or hurtful words about your life’s work, but trust me, that feeling is temporary. You’ll get over it before you even get your next glowing review.
And now...for the fun of it...
Do you have a pet or pets?
I have three delightful mutts who keep me safe from such daily dangers as the mailman, squirrels, and the neighborhood cats.
If you were a super hero, what would your name be? What costume would you wear?
I would be Future Girl. My costume would be a retro silver space suit complete with white go-go boots and a flared miniskirt. I’d wear my hair in a very futuristic modified beehive/flip and layer on the blue eyeshadow and white eyeliner. I’d carry a shiny silver ray gun and my sidekick would be a ten foot tall robot named Scoot who shoots lasers from his eyes. We would fly around during battles with our personal jetpacks, but for every day transport, we’d use our flying sedan.
Where is one place you want to visit that you haven't been before?
Just one? That’s very tough. I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled to many wonderful places that I would not mind going again, but as for some place I’ve not yet been, I think I’d like to see Tokyo. It’s very hard for me to wrap my head around a city that is actually larger and denser than New York.
Do you recall your dreams? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?
I don’t really have any reoccurring dreams, but I still today, many decades later, remember a traumatizing dream I had in kindergarten. It involved having to go back to school after dark while everyone was gone because I had left some important papers there. The cast of Sesame Street, not just the Muppets, but the humans as well, were fading in and out from the walls to give me lessons in my ABCs and numbers.
Is there one person past or present you would meet and why?
I would love to be able to go back just a few years ago and tell Octavia Butler how much of an inspiration she is to me for pushing the boundaries of quality sci-fi with a conscience and thank her for her role in breaking down both gender and racial barriers that still want to persist in the genre today.

Marie Collins A Brief Stay At Earth Human Camp Tour

A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp: Book 1 of the Secrets of Farbookonia Series Once you find out your mother is an alien, what ISN’T possible?!
That’s what 12-year-old Anne and 10-year-old Atticus Reade want to know. Minutes after learning that their mother is from the planet Farbookonia and that their parents’ secret project has put them all in danger, the children are wrenched from their sheltered existence in the Midwest and whisked off to a safe sleep-away camp in New Jersey — each with a tiny, protective “Globot” on one shoulder. Painfully aware they’re not like the others at camp, Anne and Atticus do their best to fit in while concealing their alien background and the “special talents” that go with it. But everything is so new to them, they have a hard time sorting reality from fiction. Quirky campers, campfire ghost stories, a bizarre camp director, Anne’s mysterious dreams, and Atticus’s unusual animal encounters are all equally disturbing. Just as they start getting the hang of life among young Earth humans, a broadcast on the Rec Hall TV shakes things up, and things that are truly strange emerge from normal newness. It turns out Anne and Atticus — and their new friends — may not be safe at camp after all. A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp soon thrusts them into a reality they wish was fiction.

Character Interview With Maylin Sòng (Anne’s Bunkmate in A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp)

Q. Welcome, Maylin! Thanks for agreeing to talk to us. Should we get started? What is your favorite thing about yourself?

A. Oh. Well, that’s kind of an embarrassing question. So-o-o ... hmm. Okay, I guess I’m — wait, really? I mean, I hate to use up my pass on the first question but ... Yeah. Pass.

Q. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

A. Much easier! I would be more — patient? When I have something on my mind, I can’t think about anything else. Even if there’s nothing I can do about it. Like right now, for instance. Anne’s father gave me Anne’s email address, but I have to wait until they get moved into their new house and someone sets up her computer and hopefully a phone. Right now we can’t video or talk or even write because Dark Ages! How did people even live before technology?! It’s only been one day — and I probably only have to wait a day or two more — but I can’t take my mind off it. It’s a problem. I need to talk to her. When she finally logs on, she’s going to see about 50 emails from SO-not-patient me!

Q. You talk about your mom in A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp, and we meet her at the end of camp. Who else is in your family?

A. *shrugs* My dad’s not really in the picture, you know? It’s okay that you asked, but I don’t really want to talk about him. And I totally hate it when someone gets all “oh I’m so sad for you” over that, so please, don’t be sad for me! I’m not sad so I don’t really know who you’d be sad for. I live with my mom and Aunt Mingmei (my mom’s younger sister) and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Q. No judgment! Sounds cozy! So what’s your favorite thing to do together as a family?

A. Yay! Another easy one: Watching movies together at home. All three of us love it. If competitive analyzing and talking was a thing, my mom and Aunt Mingmei would be the world champions. When I was little, they sat on either side of me and talked to me through every movie we watched to make sure I got stuff! I loved it then, but when I got older it got annoying because I wanted to get stuff on my own. So get this: Now they take notes so they don’t forget what they want to talk about! After the movie’s over, I just sit back at let them go at it. I can barely listen as fast as they can talk! The thing is, they’re super interesting. And I totally love it when I say something they didn’t think of. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, they go quiet for about 10 whole seconds, then take off again, only on the reboot they include what I said! Okay, so it’s nerd joy ...

Q. In A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp, Anne and Atticus go to camp for the first time. But you’ve spent other summers at the same camp. How was this summer different?

A. Wow, how wasn’t it different? Did you ever do that thing with two magnets where they snap together? That’s how Anne and I became friends. It was instant. I never had a friend like that before. But really, everyone was different — and not just because we were a year older. I think because Anne and Atticus were new and questioned everything, we all started asking ourselves the same things. Like yeah, why is so-and-so always so mean? And why do I hang out with this person and not that one? You know? It’s like we all suddenly realized we had choices — then these invisible gears rotated, shuffling people I already knew into this perfect group of friends! Who knew that was even possible?! Amazing. And that doesn’t even touch on the bad stuff (which Marie said I shouldn’t talk about by the way). So the short answer? Before and after. My life will be forever divided into what it was like before this summer and whatever comes after it.

Q. It’s pretty clear from A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp that you really like science fiction. A. You can say it. It’s okay: I’m a little obsessed. No, wait — you can’t be “a little” obsessed – obsessed means “a lot,” right? So okay, I’m just obsessed. I don’t skip meals or not do my homework because of it or anything, but I’m definitely into it. Wait – what was the question?

Q. I haven’t asked it yet! If you could be in any science fiction movie ever made, what would it be.

A. Wow. Okay. Right back to before and after. Up until this summer, I would have said Star Wars. I wouldn’t want to be a character though. I’d want to be a techie behind the scenes — the one in charge of the robots. I kind of have — had — a thing for C3PO and R2D2. Dream job: Keeping the robots in line. But that’s all changed. You do get that my very own life became science fiction this summer, right? For as long as I can see into the future, I think reality’s going to be enough for me — it might even be more than I can handle.

Q. What would be the perfect gift for you?

A. *big smile*

Q. I sense that you are thinking about your perfect gift ...

A. *bigger smile*

Q. Okay, you’re right. This is a no-brainer. A robot?

A. * huge smile while nodding vigorously*

Q. All right, Maylin. Thank you so much for talking to us today. In A Brief Stay at Earth Human Camp, you promised Anne and Atticus you’d send them a sci-fi watch-list after camp, and I understand you’re going to share it with us, too. Is there anything you want to say about it?

A. Oh, yes! Thanks. Well, first of all, this list could easily have been 100 titles long. It was SO hard to keep it to 20! To make it work, I tried to define science fiction as our relationship to science, space, or the future. This eliminated paranormal and horror, which is an arguable distinction, but definitely helped me stick to the limit. Also, I tried to choose an early representative of what you might call each subgenre, then didn’t repeat other examples in that category. For example, I included Gozilla, but left out Mothra and King Kong. The way I see it, if you love Gozilla, you’ll be motivated to seek the others out. As another example, I included The Thing From Another World, but left out The Blob. (Heehee, notice I just secretly added some titles to the list?) There are definitely some places where this gets blurry. That probably just reflects my personal taste. The only other thing I would say is that, in terms of how sci-fi has evolved so far, you can’t leave out sci-fi books! But that’s a topic for another day.

AUTHOR BIO
Marie C. Collins lives in Lambertville, New Jersey (USA), with her two dogs, George Eliot and Henry James, who — in spite of their snoring and a tendency to sniff horrifying things — are very good company (and in return, willingly endure Marie’s insistence

that they love being kissed on their snouts). Marie holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Journalism from Douglas College at Rutgers University and a master’s degree in English Literature from Temple University. She has held sundry jobs throughout her life, like caregiver, cook, waitress, newspaper reporter, and even a brief, misguided stint as a ballroom dance teacher. However, for most of her adult life she has written for hire, usually on topics related to education, as writing is the thing she likes to do best. Marie has a daughter she adores, Laurel Pellegrino, who is now a doctor in Seattle. Throughout Marie’s life, she has at times felt like an alien — mostly because she was extremely shy and didn’t react to things the way other people did. When she decided it was time to try to write a novel, she found herself wondering what it would be like to actually be an alien — then it struck her that that might be a good place to start. But since she’s also intrigued by the way cultures blend to make each of us feel a bit “different,” she decided her aliens should be half Earth human as well. Marie is currently writing the second book in her Secrets of Farbookonia series: The Quest for Normal. Her goal is to publish it at the end of 2015.

Moonlighting in Paris Cover Reveal and Re-release!

Moonlighting in Paris Baby Girl Book II is now available!

Excerpt:

I walked and walked ducking through alleys and shops attempting to confuse and lose him. When I no longer felt the sting of his bouncing eyes on my back I headed to the hotel. I spent so much mental energy evading him I’d gotten lost then I remembered the crude map Jean gave me; I unfolded it, checked street signs, and plotted the course. When I reached the hotel I wound my way up to my room, dropped on my bed and thought of my discoveries.

Ring! Ring! The phone blasted and my body jumped in an involuntary lurch, falling off the bed. I scrambled to my feet, and picked up the phone, as if it would blow up in my hands.

“Hello?”

“Miss Holmes, this is Didier. How is your stay?” His French accent melted the words off his tongue, and my anxiety disappeared.

“I’m great, and yes, all my needs are met.”

“If there is anything more I can do to make your stay unforgettable, don’t hesitate to ask.” Is it customary for hotel owners to call their guests?

“Thank you.” I placed the phone on the receiver.

Within minutes of hanging up the phone a knock rattled the door. Room service? I hadn’t placed an order. I grabbed a doll sized statue seated on a table, in case Mr. Dancy Eyes stood on the other side, and opened the door. To my thankful surprise it wasn’t Mr. Dancy Eyes, but a bottle of complimentary wine and a bouquet. The delivery boys’ eyes scanned the statue in my hands, and he pushed the gifts toward me as if to block my blow. With a sheepish grin I set the statue back on the table and took the vase and wine. A card on a stick hidden amongst the flowers read Invitation. I opened it and read, Join me at the restaurant downstairs for dinner under the stars tomorrow, Didier with a yes and no box underneath the print. The boy handed me a pen. I marked the yes box and gave it to him. After all, now I was glamorous Justine, and lived an exquisite life. He nodded as he caught it by the corner then scurried to the elevator.
