Had- nifty little word

My writing journey part 2. Adverbs aren't my only weakness in writing. In abundance I use the word had. Had is a handy word that can usually be taken out or replaced with another, stronger verb.

Had is a nifty little word that fits into so many situations. Such as...

I had 6 jelly beans and Nelly had 12. We combined our jelly beans and had a total of 18. I ate 6 of Nelly's jelly beans and she has 6. Together we have the same amount of jelly beans each and neither of us has more.

Those "hads" and forms of had can be removed.  Here I go again.

I forced my hand into a bag of jelly beans and pulled out 6. Nelly followed my lead and grabbed 12. We put our jelly beans together and counted 18 total. I ate 6 of Nelly's jelly beans and left her with 6, a combined total of 12. Now our jelly beans number are equal.

Which one sounds better?

Here is an excerpt from City by the Bay before fixing my "hads" and adverbs.

After a few hours on the Boardwalk I had officially worn everyone out and we retired to a beach house! Nothing Fetch did surprised me, but I was curious how he had secured a house on the beach here.

The look in my eyes must have given away my thoughts. “My landlord owns it. He lets me stay here whenever,” Fetch said very nonchalantly.

“It’s beautiful, really.”

He unlocked the front doors which opened up into a large, more like massively huge, house. I had lived in a hotel, but had never stepped foot into a single family home this size. I knew my eyes gave my emotions away. Fetch looked at me with his grin and silver bullet eyes, then he picked me up like a baby doll and carried me up the spiral staircase.

He threw me down on the soft padded bed, and laid his body lightly over mine, dropping angel kisses over my chest and abdomen until his mouth finally settled on mine.

After our bed excursion, while laying on my back, Fetch traced an invisible line from my chest to belly button, “You have the most perfect abs.”

“You think, I walk everywhere.” Turning to lay on my belly, he continued tracing his finger across my flesh, up my spine and down my spine, across the small of my back and up again.

“I’ve never met anyone as physically perfect as you.” He rested his head on my back, tufts of his long dark hair lay limply across my back. Within minutes he was lightly sleeping and my thoughts wandered.

Fetch and I weren’t a “thing”. At least we had never spoken on relationship terms. We saw each other once or twice a week, hung out, enjoyed each other and, like me, he enjoyed cooking. Sometimes we cooked together, but he was highly competitive and I couldn’t resist a chance to one-up him at something, so we usually made a contest out of cooking, using Kacy’s customers as judges. It turned out we were evenly matched on cooking skills.

Fetch’s apartment was a typical bachelor pad - a mess. His clothes lay haphazardly across his couch, chairs, floor. His TV was the size of a movie screen, and he wouldn’t allow anyone but him to touch his prized remote. He had a stack of ‘girlie magazines’ in a pile beside his bed. During my first visit I had noticed the swimsuit calendar, the one I modeled in, at the top of his pile. When he stepped into the kitchen I quickly grabbed the calendar and stuffed it into my oversized purse. Paranoid maybe, careful definitely. As an artist, he had an eye for detail, and he would notice me, as Justine, in a heartbeat.

His studio was a nook, the only part of his apartment he kept organized. Paintings, and sketches covered every inch. In the last few months I had become the subject of much of his art. He filled an entire sketchpad of me sleeping, turning, stretching. Flipping through the pad, the scenes played as a movie. Lost in my thoughts, I too had fallen asleep, awaking when the warm spot on my back suddenly turned cold from Fetch lifting his head. I opened my eyes to his silver bullets caressing every centimeter and curve of my body.

How many times did you count the word "had". I counted 10. And 14 adverbs.

After a few hours on the Boardwalk I wore everyone out and we retired to the beach house! Nothing Fetch did surprised me, but I was curious how he secured a house on the beach in Santa Cruz.

The look in my eyes gave away my thoughts. “My landlord owns it. He lets me stay here whenever.”

“It’s amazing.”

He unlocked the front doors which opened into a large -  massive house. In Paris I lived in a hotel, but never stepped foot into a single family home this size. I knew my eyes gave my emotions away. Fetch looked at me with his grin and silver bullet eyes, then he picked me up like a baby doll and carried me up the spiral staircase.

He threw me onto the soft padded bed, and laid his body over mine, dropping angel kisses over my chest and abdomen until his lips settled on mine.

After our bed excursion, while laying on my back, Fetch traced an invisible line from my chest to belly button. “Your abs are perfect.”

“You think, I walk everywhere.” I turned over to lay on my back, he continued tracing his finger across my flesh, the length of my spine, across the small of my back and up again.

“I’ve never met anyone as perfect as you.” He rested his head on my back, tufts of his long dark hair lay limply across it. Within minutes he fell asleep and my thoughts wandered.

After trimming and revising 1 had and 3 adverbs. Not bad.

Take Me Tomorrow by Shannon A. Thompson

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. Honestly, I enjoyed it. The idea behind the plot is simple yet intriguing. Below is my review.

Take Me Tomorrow is an exciting, quick dystopian read. The setting reminded me something of Hunger Games, in our world but different. A huge massacre changed society, the drug tomo center stage. The end result the government set up new stricter laws. Travelling is difficult to do, children can’t be out after a certain time in the late evening, and if child is caught with tomo in their system they are sent away. Tomo is a drug that causes its users to see the future. The side effects are its users appear older. It wears their bodies down.

Sophie is 16 years old and lives with her father who works for the government but is covertly a rebel. She meets “bad boy” Noah and learns of the ensuing war against tomo. Sophia is forced to make choices to protect her friends and family. She and her gang of teen rebel friends use their wits and courage to take a stand. The new war is only beginning. The end of Take Me Tomorrow begs for a sequel.

Shannon A. Thompson puts a unique twist on the battle of right and wrong. Each page of the novel is packed with explosive teen action as they forge onward. The characters full and vibrant are sure to be loved and hated.

A YA read sure to be loved by many!

The Lighter Side of Silliness Blog Tour

Blurb: Poetry: The Lighter Side of Silliness

On the following pages you will read some downright silly, funny, crazy, mysterious, strange, odd and different poems.

“A Feared Man” was written for my oldest daughter KayCee and for her love for, no other than Harry Potter.
“A Treasury Past” is a poem I wrote one rainy day when I actually had more than five minutes to myself and I wanted a epic poem.
“Kiss Attack” came from game my youngest use to play; he would grab our faces and yell KISS ATTACK!!! Then he would kiss us when he was a toddler.
”Lindy” is about a stuff blue puppy that was given to me before my youngest was born and how special it is to him still today.

“Stinky Toes” was written one day after my older son had taken his
old shoes off and his feet stuck so badly!
Each of these poems in the book all have some sort of connection to our family and home. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did in writing them!

I have a great love for my son who is Autistic who has taught me to see the world in a whole different perspective in return I pass this along within my poems I write. Hayden was 6 when we found out that he was Autistic, he faces several mental challenges in his daily school work but he is so smart with technology, fun, creative, funny, warm, sweet little boy who just sees the world in a different way. His dreams are bigger than the moon and his love for everyone is just as big.

Devon's Choice Blog Tour- Catherine Bennet

Devon's Choice is brought to you by Double Decker Books.

Back Cover Blurb:

Life holds no surprises for Devon Murphy. Her life consists of keeping tabs on her aging Irish father, working part time at a coffee shop, and building her online graphics design business. Devon’s only tricky situation is a shallow relationship with the pampered and affluent Michael Turner, who sees her as just another woman to conquer.

Following his father’s death, Brandon’s only goal is to expand the family business and live life on his own terms. That is, until he walks into the coffee shop one snowy evening and meets the enchanting, red-haired barista behind the counter. But can Devon and Brandon’s attraction for each other be strong enough to help erase their deepest disappointments and renew their faith in God?

EXCERPT:

Once they got to the park, Devon unhooked his leash.  The dog ran in the snow and stopping abruptly, he turned, tongue out and ears perked.  Brandon reached down and patted snow into a ball and threw it far beyond Bubby, who took off after it.  After a few more throws, they left the dog to himself and walked along the brick path to a bench.  Brandon brushed the snow off with his gloved hand and they sat down.  Bubby played some more, then lay with his head up and ears alert.
“I’m curious,” Brandon said, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees.  “I may be out of line to ask you, but what kind of relationship do you have with this Michael guy?”  He looked sideways to see her worrying her bottom lip and hoped he was going to get a truthful statement.
“It’s pretty shallow, really.  We’ve never discussed being an exclusive couple. He travels a lot with his company and I figure he probably goes out with other women, and not just for business if you know what I mean.  Once he practically admitted to it.”
“What kind of job does he have?”
Devon, who’d been watching the dog, turned to look at him.  “He’s the Executive Vice President for Turner Construction.  His father owns the company.”
Brandon drew himself back.  “Turner Construction!  That’s the largest construction company in the Midwest.”
     “So, you’ve heard of it?”
“Yes, my dad had some experience with them.”
“So was it a good experience?”
Brandon shrugged.  “I really couldn’t say.”  Then, hoping to refocus her attention, he asked,  “How’d you ever meet him anyway?”
“He hit my car in a parking lot.  Not very romantic.”
Brandon looked over at her neutral expression.  Whatever kind of relationship she had with Michael Turner didn’t seem to be making her happy.  At that moment, all he wanted to do was to make her forget all about the jerk.

As if sensing him watching her, Devon turned her head enough to make eye contact with him.  The faint, milky glow from the streetlight showed enough of her features for him to see a soft blush warm her cheeks.  Under her dark lashes, he watched her sea green eyes glint invitingly as her soft lips turned up at the corners.  In that moment, his resolve to keep the date on a friendly level came crashing down.

Chris Birdy The Girl in White Pajamas

On my reading list for 2015 is both The Girl in White Pajamas and the sequel The Girl in Black Pajamas. I have had these books on my reader for a few months and was so happy to final have the chance to get started reading the series.

I wasn't disappointed and recommend this book for anyone who loves mystery, suspense, and crazy family drama. Coming in May to Amazon the audiobook!

My Review:

The Girl in White Pajamas got my attention from the start. The scene a blistery cold night in Boston, a man in a parked car without the heat on, and a lady walking out of an office building. The man exits his car when he sees the woman leave the building and walks up to her. Few words are exchanged before he is shot in the head. The next chapter the reader is introduced to Bogie MacGruder who grew up with his illegitimate father in a house that offered him little love. His half siblings can barely function on their own and his father’s wife hates him. The MacGruder family is beyond dysfunctional. Bogie has a 3 year old precocious daughter, Izzy, which he meets for the first time.  She is sure to win over reader’s hearts as she becomes the hit of the book.

The story focuses on introducing the reader to the family along with all their history. Towards the end the small clues Birdy drops throughout the novel come together and the mystery is solved. The ending leaves new doors opened for the sequel, already on my book shelf!

The author does a remarkable job bringing each character to life forcing me to love, loathe, and like them. The story is believable and far-fetched at the same time giving it a taste of humor. As a visual reader the story plays like a movie and the action doesn’t stop until the last page is turned.

Interesting and suspenseful!

Saying Goodnight...

The darkness creeps upon me each night while I tap away at my keyboard. My characters devise schemes and carry out action whilst I am the teller of their lives.

When I shut down my computer for the night pangs of guilt and desire shoot through me like venom. As I rest my eyes to sleep they talk and babble in my head continuing to play out the scene where I left them.

In the morning my deepest desire is to open my computer and type out all they did through the night. Their words and actions linger in my mind as I drive to work. They are relentless. I pull into the parking lot at work, no desire to cut off my engine. Instead I wish to drive to Starbucks sip on a coffee, eat an everything bagel smothered in cream cheese and continue their plight. Still sitting in my car I turn the engine off against my will and start my day knowing I will be with them again soon but not long enough.

The cycle repeats until Saturday or vacation arrives then I'm all theirs!

New footage from Baby Girl Book 1 In the Beginning

A Close Call

Over the following months we bounced from one city to the next, blurring my memory. We changed our appearances by wearing layered clothing and hats that could be pulled off on the run. We stayed in cities long enough to pull off heists and make money than disappeared. We kept a low profile, ghost people, slipping in and out unnoticed.
I took the time to keep up with our crime sprees through the newspaper. The police were clueless and never linked the crimes together. Under the small crimes section in small print is where I found most our thefts listed with one exception- The judge’s house.
We got cocky and chose a house in a ritzy gated community belonging to a judge. Einstein posed as a landscaper replacement from a job agency with the usual crew and did inside surveillance. Once inside he staked out the judge’s property and found a small gap at the bottom of the fence big enough for us to squeeze underneath without getting scratched. After we squeezed under the gap we traipsed through the woods surrounding the inside of the gate, which backed up to his property. Einstein did his usual security system magic by cutting the outside wires and we were in.
The judge’s house was full of valuables; diamond earrings, gold necklaces adorned with amethyst, rubies, emeralds, and onyx. We took small stuff that fit in our back packs to be carried out and pawned without drawing attention.
While in the judge’s office I dug through his desk drawers and found a bundle of cash then the sirens began wailing in the distance, forcing a shot of panic in my belly. I stuffed the letter opener and cash into the bag. Einstein and I high-tailed it out of the house. The sirens howled behind us as we cut back through the woods and slid under the gate on our backs. I breathed a sigh of relief.
“That was too close.”
Einstein took my hand, helping me to my feet. “No kidding.” We slunk back to our temporary home and dumped our packs.
The wad of cash, jewelry, and letter opener rolled out of my back pack hitting the cement floor.
“Holy cow Cleo!” Einstein grabbed the letter opener and twisted it in his hand holding it up to the light. “Look at the engraving. We can’t sell this it belonged to a famous eighteenth century author.”
I lowered the wad of cash I had in my hand. “I… it was in my hand when I heard the sirens.”
“It’s solid gold. We’ll take care of it later.” He looked at the huge bundle of cash. “You want help counting?”
“Sure.” I handed him half the bundle, and he stole a kiss on my lips.
The grand total of our loot for the day amounted to $5,000 in cash, five new gold chains adorning various gemstones, diamond earrings, a silver place setting, brass candleholders, and a gold letter opener engraved with an eighteenth century authors name.
The judge offered a reward for the return of the letter opener. We thought of various scenarios in which to collect the reward, but any of them would have led to police involvement. Chimes went off inside my head and I came up with a brilliant plan.

We wiped the letter opener clean, even though we always wore gloves, and found a drunk homeless man passed out in an alley, derelicts littered the shabbier parts of cities. I pressed the letter opener against his finger tips and left it under his hand while Einstein used a pay phone to call it in anonymously. A tall apartment building stood kitty corner to where the derelict man lay. We chose that building to meet back up and watched the scene from the fourth floor landing. The judge was grateful to have his letter opener back, and we took deep breaths that we pulled off framing the innocent homeless man.

EXCERPT
Ida was the only daughter of Mr. Shaaban, who was a shopkeeper at Matunda village, while her mother was a small scale farmer in the same village. She had two elder brothers who lived in Khalama. The elder brother was also a shop keeper, while the younger one was still trying to get a job as a doctor.
She had been brought up in a Christian family and was educated up to secondary school level. One fateful day, when she was in the third grade, she had been sent home by the boarding school management to collect the school-fees balance of the year, and as chance would have it, she had gotten acquainted with Malvis.
She had walked home that day, scuffing her school-shoes through the white dust of the clay road, worrying about the money, inwardly praying for her brother - who was still unemployed - to get a job.
Over her, the green branches of the acacias danced in the breeze, showering down spirals of red blossoms to stain the long bright road ahead. So engrossed in her thoughts was she, that she didn’t realize that she had dropped her school identity-card until a young man, slightly older than her brother, stopped her.
“Hello there! How are you?” he hailed.
“I am fine, thank you,” she replied.
“But to me, you don’t look all that fine, maybe I could be of help,” he offered cheekily.
“I am not sure what help you think I might need, besides we are strangers,” Ida countered smartly.
“I see you are in your school uniform, have you been sent home due to lack of money for the school fees?” he persisted.
“Stop bothering me with impertinent questions,” she retorted, getting irritated by his inquisitive nature. “If there is anything you wish to say, get on with it, and be gone!”
“Hey don’t get angry! I was just interested. By the way, I am Malvis Mathenge, better known as Mr. Mathenge to my pupils at Masomo primary school. I bet you have heard of the school. But you don’t have to be formal with me; you can just call me Malvis.”
“Mr. Mathenge; am okay with that if it is what you wanted to know. I am…”
“No need for that, Ida,” he interrupted her.
“And why is that?” she asked, a tinge of irritated embarrassment evident in her voice. “And how do you know my name?”
“Because…” and he handed her the identity card. She looked at him suspiciously. “Don’t get the wrong impression of me,” he said defensively. “I just found it, and thought it must belong to you since you are the only student on the road at this moment.”
Her lips parted in a grateful smile as she thanked him prettily: “Thank you Mr. Malvis Mathenge!”
“Just Malvis, please, Ida…”

A big day for me

I woke up yesterday with a review for Eye of the Storm Eilida's Tragedy and this morning I awoke to another. Needless to say I am feeling very blessed.

Yesterday's review is posted at My Train of Thoughts On... by Karen. Feel free to visit Karen's blog and share.

Today's review is posted at Reader's Favorite. Here is the full review. Please visit the review page and share. If you have your own review of the book you can post it there too.

Reviewed By Michelle Randall for Readers’ Favorite

Eilida is planning to meet up with friends at the local bar, but instead something draws her to the neighbors' house. As she slow sneaks over and looks in, what she sees is so horrific and terrifying that she takes off running. It has started storming hard, but she just keeps running until she slides down a hillside, landing in a heap against a rock. Sunshine is a receptionist at the Lyden Times Newspaper and she loves her neat and orderly world, only this day nothing is neat and orderly. A young woman was found in the woods with no identification and no memory, and the strange thing is that she looks just like Sunshine only with a different color hair. Eye of The Storm: Eilida's Tragedy (Ruthless Storm Trilogy) (Volume 1) follows Sunshine as she turns reporter and tries to discover what sent this woman running and ending up in her town.

Eye of The Storm centers around Eilida's fear of storms. She hates them, and as the story progresses we slowly learn the reasoning. Sunshine, on the other hand, can never remember a day of rain, but as she investigates this case, she is suddenly plagued by storms. Author Elle Klass creates a compelling story using tragedy, survival, guilt, repressed memories, visual triggers and storms to create a tale that encompasses so much more than you expect. The tragedy of three families is told in this one story. It is a well written and compelling tale with an amazing concept that is worth the read. Great for young adults and adults as well.

To make my day better my wonderful boyfriend just washed the pollen of my car and I'm going to my first basketball game this evening. I'm not sure my day could get any better. Thank you!

Adverbs - Pesky fun little words - smiley :-)

Thanks for joining me during my editing journey. The consensus for using adverbs in creative writing is STAY AWAY from them. There is no need for them and distracts from the writing.

This is true. I could say
His stomach growled hungrily in anticipation of munching on the juicy cheeseburger he held in his hand. or
His stomach growled with hunger as his mouth watered in anticipation of munching on the cheeseburger he held in his hand.

Each sentence says the same thing only- adverb alert - with and without an adverb. My problem is I love adverbs. Take a verb and add ly. They are fun.
happily
joyfully
carefully
tentatively
really
very
jointly
disgustingly

My current project is editing the Baby Girl books. When I published them they had been edited a single time. As I work through the latest edits I realize I have a ton of adverbs. When I rerelease them they will be short the many adverbs they currently - adverb - contain.

Should writers stay away from adverbs all the time. I say, "Heck no!" We should use them sparingly - adverb - but it doesn't mean we have to stop using them completely - adverb-. And I can use them on my blog whenever I want. I can go adverb crazy here! singly, menacingly, dutifully, gently, patiently, sorrowfully... You get the idea.

A before excerpt from Moonlighting in Paris:

Only a couple days after the Halette incident, and a few days before mine and Didier’s wedding, my latest escapade still weighed heavily on my mind and my thoughts raced about as if going around and around a track. I felt I couldn’t stay, as eventually her body would turn up, and I couldn’t risk that type of publicity. The event had occurred near an affair I was hosting. I had my ducks in a row, as always, but I wasn’t sure how I would react when Halette’s body hit the news. In my past life I had performed many questionable acts, but I had never either purposely, or by accident, killed another human being. Mr. Dancy Eyes dumping her body also brought my past stinging front and center in my life, looming around my very presence. Didier was wonderful, but he didn’t truly know me. He knew Justine. His words, Justine will you marry me? reverberated against the gray matter inside my head. How could I enter into a marriage with a man I had never been truthful with from the beginning? I loved being Justine and the woman at his side, but marriage? What if we had children? Would their lives be in danger as well? Would we have to provide them with personal bodyguards? Worse, they would have a mother they knew, but not really. I lived with a web of lies and deceit entangling me, which continued to twist around my soul. I couldn’t do that to anyone else. Not my future children and not Didier. He meant more to me than to entrap him in my morbid life. People around me - the true me - died. I had decided I couldn’t marry him. Why did he have to propose and ruin such a good thing? I didn’t know how to tell him. I had to come up with a plan.

Did you count the number of adverbs? I found 7. Here is the same excerpt mostly adverb free.

A couple days after the Halette incident, and a few days before mine and Didier’s wedding, my latest escapade still weighed on my mind like a load of gold bricks. My thoughts raced in circles. I couldn’t stay, fearing Halettes’ body turning up bringing negative publicity and hurting Didier. The event occurred near an affair I hosted. I took care to conceal my part in her death but I wasn’t sure of my reaction when Halette’s body hit the news. In my past life I performed many questionable acts, but I never on purpose or by accident, killed another human being.

Mr. Dancy Eyes dumping her body brought my past stinging front and center in my life, looming around my very presence. Didier was wonderful, but he didn’t know me. He knew Justine. His words, Justine will you marry me? reverberated against the gray matter inside my head. It wouldn’t be right to marry a man I hadn't been truthful with him from the beginning? I loved being Justine and the woman at his side, but marriage? What if we had children? Would they be in danger and need personal bodyguards? Worse, they would have a fake mother!

I lived with a web of lies and deceit entangling me, which continued to twist around my soul. I didn’t want to force that on anyone else - not my future children and not Didier. He meant more to me than to entrap him in my morbid life. People around me - the true me - died. I decided marrying him wasn’t possible. His proposal ruined a good thing - correction I ruined a good thing when I flipped Halette over the railing. How would I tell him? The self doubt and shame bouncing in my head made me aware I needed a plan.

Better? I not only - adverb - took out adverbs but took out other weak words.

One of my most commonly - adverb - found mistakes in creative writing is the use of adverbs.
Does the use of adverbs keep me from reading a book? Certainly - adverb- not.
Does the use of adverbs make me think the writer less talented than a writer who doesn't? Probably- adverb - not.
So long as a book has a good plot and strong characters I most likely -adverb - will not notice their use of adverbs. Correction, I do notice but don't care. I can't think of any fiction book I've read that contained no adverbs. Someone put them into the language so they are there for a reason.Use them carefully - adverb.

Did you find any adverbs in this post that I didn't point out. If so write them below along with your favorite adverbs.

Perplexing Astrological Read

When I plan a book I start with the plot and a basic outline for my characters. Once the plot gets going the characters personalities come forward. Eye of the Storm Eilida's Tragedy is a dark book charged with plot twists.

Eilida is a 23 year old young woman who has a dark secret lurking inside her, and is completely unaware of it. It isn't until the final couple chapters that her deadly secret finds it's way into her conscious thought. A few weeks ago I posted Cleo's natal reading at the same time I also had Eilida's done. Eilida's gave both Marcha Fox- the reader and myself goosebumps. Hers shows something called a yod which indicates a fated life. Creepy, especially since I didn't plan Eilida's character, I let it develop throughout the story. Her birth date and place were already planned as an important piece of the plot. Below is Eilida's natal chart and reading. After you read this if you're seeing shadows in the corner, hearing strange sounds, or can't get the hair on your arms to lay down remember I warned you.

To find out more about the benefits of having a reading done on your characters visit Marcha's blog.

Should you be interested in a computerized natal chart they are available at Valkyrieastrology.com for $14.95. What you need is a date, place, time of birth, and/or biographical sketch. The more specific you are the more precise the natal chart will be.

Chapter 1: How You Approach Life and How You Appear To Others

Virgo Rising:

Modest, unobtrusive, and often rather quiet or shy, you are a person who is content to be in the background or to serve as an assistant, in the supporting role rather than in the lead. You are quite humble in your own assessment of yourself and you have a very strong perfectionistic attitude, with a tendency to be overly self-critical. No matter how well you do something, you always see the flaws in it and how it could be improved. Often you will simply refuse to attempt something because you feel you cannot meet your own high standards.

You have an eye for detail and get upset when something is not done just so, usually something others consider rather inconsequential or trivial. You are hard to please and your relationships with others may suffer because of this. You also have refined sensitivities and are very discriminating and particular in your choice of foods, clothes, friends, artwork, etc. Order in your environment is very important to you.

You step into situations rather cautiously, and not without realistically assessing all of the risks and potential advantages involved. Unless something is a safe bet, you are unlikely to dive into it. You tend to underestimate your own capacities and to lack confidence and trust in life, which inhibits your spontaneity. Worrying is a bad habit of yours. On the other hand, you rarely fall flat on your face and what you do, you do very well.

Others see you as a self-sufficient and rather self-contained person. You have a strong sense of propriety. Politeness, good manners, and correct behavior are important to you. Your clear, cool, objective and nonemotional attitude is apparent to others first, and though you are really quite helpful and caring, you do not radiate much sympathy so that others may not see the helpful side as readily. You may seem more businesslike and factual, and also more conservative, than you really are at heart. You are the person others might go to for technical advice or an unbiased opinion, but not for emotional support.

You are keenly observant, intelligent, and have a great desire for learning and for self-improvement, but you are not especially ambitious and are often satisfied in a rather simple, unglamorous position in life.

Chapter 2: The Inner You: Your Real Motivation

Sun in Aries:

You are a person who thrives on challenge, and you often feel that you must battle your way through life, depending upon no one and nothing but your own strength, intelligence, and courage. You believe in being totally honest, true to oneself and one's own vision and convictions, even if that means standing alone. Honesty, integrity, personal honor, and authenticity are your gods, and you have no sympathy for weakness of character in others.

You crave the freedom to do things in your own way, and you work very well independently. Cooperating with others or carrying out another's will is not your style. You like to be the chief - or to go it alone.

You love action and if others are settling down into a nice, comfortable little rut, then you are always ready to stir things up, do something new, make changes, bring in some fresh blood. Routine and sameness are like death to you. You are not afraid of trying something that's never been done before, and even though you may be seen as a fool sometimes, you also discover, invent, and initiate things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following your own star are the breath of life for you, and you wilt (or get very frustrated and angry) if you cannot do this.

You are spontaneous, impulsive, direct, enthusiastic, and assertive. You believe in the power of positive thinking and positive action, and you think of yourself as a strong person - even invincible. You hate being ill or in any way in a position of dependency. Accepting your own human limitations and emotional needs is often difficult for you.

You are basically aggressive in your attitudes and have less facility in the receptive arts of relating to others, picking up subtle messages and nuances, listening, nurturing, and harmonizing. Often you are so fired up about your own projects or goals that you inadvertently run over or ignore other people's feelings and interests. Being receptive and appreciative of others' contributions, ideas, and feelings would go a long way in improving your relationships. Your impatience to get on with things causes you to be rather insensitive, and to therefore alienate others unnecessarily. You also frequently try to accomplish your ends by using anger or some version of a temper tantrum. You would gain much by learning to slow down, relax, and just let things be sometimes, but your energetic, restless nature rarely allows you to do this.

Sun in 8th house:

You crave intense experiences and are attracted to aspects of life that are strange, unfathomable, or taboo. You may hide your interests or inclinations, except from those who know you very intimately. You are rarely content with yourself and your life, and you have an inner urge to be continually going farther or deeper than you ever have before. You also have a strong interest in social power and the role that money and economics play in people's lives.

Sun Square Neptune:

You are extremely sensitive and imaginative, and you can get lost in your dreams, fantasies, and visions. You are attracted to artistic and creative pursuits, the world of color, beauty, and emotion. You are also drawn to mysticism and have deep spiritual aspirations and yearnings. Gentle and peace-loving, you may lack the will and competitive spirit needed to make your way in the world. You are often impractical and may seek to avoid or escape the hard realities of life.

Sun Sextile Mars:

You are positive, vital, energetic, active, a go-getter.  You enjoy competition, and your initiative and self-confidence make you a winner.

Chapter 3: Mental Interests and Abilities

Mercury in Taurus:

Your mind operates in a very deliberate and methodical manner and you dislike being rushed or forced to give an opinion before you have thoroughly ruminated and digested an idea. You are also difficult to influence once your mind is made up.

Though slower to grasp new concepts or learn new skills, you are patient and persevering and, in fact, often become quite adept at whatever you put your mind and hand to, for you are willing to devote much time and attention to it. You succeed not so much because of your mental brilliance, but because you have the ability to concentrate and follow a project through to its completion. You have an aptitude for singing or drawing.

Mercury in 8th house:

The mysterious and the unknown fascinate you and you may investigate the supernatural or something that is hidden or taboo. You need to know what is going on behind the scenes. You are also deeply curious about or astute about economic, political, or social power, big business, and the motives and powers behind the social facade.

Mercury Sextile Venus:

You appreciate aesthetics and have a fine sense of form, design, and beauty. You could develop great technical skill as an artist, designer, craftsman, or creative writer. You could also sell objects of beauty - artistic products, cosmetics, jewelry, etc.

You have the ability to please and harmonize well with others and have a talent for assuaging strain in the relationship of two other people. Your sense of humor, tact, and personal charm are a great benefit to you in any work with people on a one-to-one level.

Mercury Sextile Jupiter:

You have an ongoing interest in learning and expanding your mental horizons. You enjoy traveling, philosophical discussions, and exchanging ideas with those of different experiences and viewpoints. Broad-minded and fair, you are well-suited to law, consulting, diplomatic relations, and also business. You learn quickly, and can pick up on a new idea or concept with relative ease.

Chapter 4: Emotions: Moods, Feelings, Romance

Moon in Leo:

Warm, loving, and generous in your affections, you inspire tremendous devotion and loyalty in your loved ones. This is good, since you would never settle for anything less! You want to be adored and worshipped like the king or queen that you feel you are, and it is difficult for anyone to resist the warmth and attention you lavish on those you care about. You have a great deal of pride and need to be recognized and appreciated. The way to really hurt your feelings is to ignore you. You are genuine, sincere, and have a strong sense of personal integrity. You hate emotional games and dishonesty.

Moon in 12th house:

Your own feelings and emotions are something of an enigma to you, and it is often difficult for you to share with others what you are feeling.

You frequently withdraw from contact with the world, and need a healing, peaceful environment in order to blossom and come out of yourself.

You identify with the oppressed, disenfranchised or underdog in any situation and want to help them or care for them in some way.

Moon Opposition Venus:

You have conflicting emotional desires and needs which complicate your personal life. You may feel that you cannot depend on your love partner to take care of you or perhaps you cannot decide what you really want in a love relationship: a parent or a lover. If your needs for emotional sustenance and love are not satisfied, overeating (especially sweets) can be a problem for you.

Venus in Aquarius:

You are open and unconventional in your attitude towards love, romance, and sex. You enjoy socializing, bringing people together, and having many friends of both sexes. You value friendship very highly and are, in fact, more comfortable being a friend than a lover. You desire an intellectual rapport or spiritual bond with your love partner, but deep intimacy and emotional bonding do not come easily to you. The role of "husband" or "wife" in the traditional sense doesn't appeal to you, and you abhor jealousy and possessiveness since you feel that no person truly "belongs" to another. You appreciate a love partner who will allow you plenty of freedom and is not very emotionally demanding.

Venus in 6th house:

When you care about someone, you like to serve them, doing small thoughtful favors, helping them, or doing something tangible to show your affection.

You also have considerable artistic or creative skill and may sew or do other handiwork or crafts. In fact, you are suited for a profession involving beauty or pleasure or making people happy in some way.

Venus Trine Jupiter:

You appreciate beautiful surroundings and congenial company, and though you enjoy helping people, you will rarely put yourself out too much in order to do so. You are good-humored and generous at heart but inclined to be lazy.

Chapter 5: Drive and Ambition: How You Achieve Your Goals

Mars in Aquarius:

You are very socially oriented and work well in cooperation with others. You may be active in community affairs or unite with others of similar ideals and intentions to work toward a common goal. Progressive and democratic, you are not concerned with hoarding personal power or having authority over others. You are a team player.

New, unconventional methods appeal to you, especially ideas that involve bringing people together or creating fairer working conditions - such as networking, profit-sharing, job-sharing, etc. New technologies also interest you.

Your energy level is high but somewhat erratic.  You can be impatient, rebellious, and inconstant in pursuing your aims.

Mars in 6th house:

You expect to work hard for anything you accomplish and you have no patience for people who don't pull their own weight. Work is a passion for you at times, and you push yourself too hard. You can be too demanding of the people you work with also.

If your energy is not invested in a job or career, you can become a fanatic about your health, and you may exercise or "work out" vigorously and perhaps excessively.

Mars Square Pluto:

You have a powerful will and when you want something, you pursue it passionately and relentlessly until you achieve it. You may be so driven by your desire that you lose all objectivity. You often become compulsive, even obsessed, with doing or achieving something, no matter what the costs or how hard you must work for it. Your forcefulness may be veiled or subtle, for often you do not reveal your real aims and intentions to others until they cross you. Intense power struggles and relationships with a strong dominance/submissiveness theme are likely. You have enormous energy reserves, and are capable of extraordinary effort and great achievement if you use your energies for constructive purposes.

Chapter 6: Other Influences

Jupiter in Cancer:

You make others feel accepted and comfortable. You have a knack for breaking down feelings of alienation and you make others feel included and a part of group activities. You have a loving, protective side that wants to take care of everyone. Creating a supportive atmosphere that is nourishing both to yourself and to others is one of your strengths.

Also, your home and heritage are important to you, and you maintain close connections to your past.

Jupiter in 10th house:

Your career or contribution to the world at large is likely to touch many people's lives in a very positive, helpful way. You aim high and have an innate confidence and trust both in your own abilities and in life in general, which enables you to go far. You want to do something BIG with your life, and you attract the support you need to do so, for your aims are not solely for your own personal benefit. You want to give something back to the world, or to improve others' lives as well as your own.

Saturn in Capricorn:

You have a great capacity for self-denial in the pursuit of a long-range goal. You are capable of hard work and persistent labor, but you may lack joyfulness and the ability to play. You often feel burdened by life's demands and responsibilities, and may envy those who seem to attract what they want in life without a great deal of personal effort.

There is a very judgmental, stern, and uncompromising side of yourself which may inhibit you a great deal. You must avoid becoming heavy and cynical, or becoming a rather callous, sophisticated adult whose practicality and realism squeeze out the playful, imaginative side of life.

Saturn in 5th house:

It may be difficult for you to play spontaneously or just let your hair down, for you tend to inhibit that side of yourself by being too self-conscious and concerned with the impression you are making.

You may work very hard at some sport or creative medium in order to excel, for you want very, very much to be noticed, acknowledged, and recognized as special in some way. Though you may indeed be outstanding, you also need to learn to relax and enjoy yourself more.

Uranus in Capricorn:

You are part of a 7 year group of people who are active in reforming businesses, governments, and other large social structures. A great deal of streamlining and reorganizing takes place, most of which will help to improve the well-being of people, the ultimate goal of these reforms. Your generation will promote various reforms that will vary in different nations. For example, some will increase socialization of public services and others will put more services in the hands of private industry. In either case, your generation strives for greater efficiency and a great deal of waste is eliminated from industry and government.

Uranus in 4th house:

Your childhood or your relationship with your parents was unsettling or unstable in some way, so that you may never have felt that you had firm ground beneath your feet. One of your parents may have been unusual, eccentric, or an inconstant influence in your life. Abrupt changes in location or in family relationships may have made you feel insecure, but positively you were given more freedom and less pressure to conform to conventions, which enables you to be more of an individual and less tethered to restrictive ideas of how one "should" behave, feel, or live.

Uranus Conjunct Neptune:

You were also born during a period that lasted approximately 5 years and is characterized by an unusually high degree of imagination and sensitivity. You are part of a group of people who are very inspired but also unstable. Many unusual contributions to the arts, music, religion, and psychic development are brought forth from your age group. These works are often strange and bizarre, and always original. Your age group also inspires intense political movements that are often fanatical or unreasonable in their goals.

Neptune in Capricorn:

You are part of a 14 year group of people who are conservative and traditional in spiritual aspirations and religious outlook. Your age group returns to some traditional basics in religion, and also traditional styles in music and art. Classical music and literature have a revival with your age group, and a great deal of inspiration is gained from the masters of arts, music, literature, and philosophy throughout history. Your age group is contemplative and reflective about religious matters and you take an objective and logical approach to religious issues. Many of you are cynics and critics of spiritual and metaphysical ideas.

Other age groups criticize your group for not having enough heart and compassion. Sometimes this is true and is evidenced by some unusually crafty and manipulative fraud and deception that occurs in the higher ranks of governments and large businesses.

Neptune in 4th house:

Your childhood and early home life were colored by a great deal of confusion or by people with unusually active imaginations, aspirations, or fantasies. It is difficult for you to see your childhood and your relationship with your parents in a clear, realistic light. You may search for the ideal, loving home you wish you had, or believe you had, when you were a child. Finding inner peace and a sense of emotional security within yourself is important to you.

Neptune Sextile Pluto:

The entire generation to which you belong has tremendous opportunities for spiritual rebirth and awakening. This will not be forced upon you or precipitated by unavoidable events, rather it comes from an inner yearning and a natural propensity to seek the depths.

Pluto in Scorpio:

You are part of a 12 year group of people who have a complex and deep emotional side. Your age group has a great fascination for the mysteries of life, and members of your age group will make extraordinary breakthroughs in the understanding of life processes; major advances in biological sciences will open up new technological possibilities. Intensive probing into genetic structure and cellular processes will accelerate genetic engineering into new vistas. Your generation also probes the mysteries of birth and death, and members of your age group will even develop laboratories for forging new understanding of what happens at birth and death. Other breakthroughs will be made in the understanding of animal behavior and sexual activity. Archeological studies will unearth vast new insights into the history of man, and the exploration of the ocean will receive a new impetus, spurred by unusual and interesting findings made at the bottom of the sea.

Behind all of this work is the deep, probing, penetrating interest in the mysterious. There is a deep fascination with sex, power, and the occult as well. Hypnosis, karate, and other mental and physical training techniques are likely to be very popular with your age group. The love of mystery is also likely to bring a revival of mystery novels and movies; your age group will bring the macabre into current fashion and style.

You are an emotionally complex group, and you can be prone to some very strange behavior. Intrigue and mystery are exciting to your age group, and hopefully this does not get the better of you, causing you to act in a cruel or grotesque manner. There is a chance that crime, violence, and emotional disturbance will be relatively high in your age group, but hopefully your interest in the mysterious, strange, grotesque, and macabre will not manifest in this way.

Pluto in 3rd house:

You have a probing, penetrating mind and are highly analytical and critical in your thinking. Work that involves research, investigating mysteries or hidden causes, or deep study and analysis suits you very well.

You are also a convincing speaker, bringing others around to your own point of view by the intensity of your convictions.

Sufficiently spooked? Happy Friday the 13th!
